THE Brunei Darussalam BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BD-BEBC) is returning for its third ‘Fruits of BIMP-EAGA – Culture and Food in Tourism 2017’ Expo from July 27-30 at the Atrium of The Airport Mall in Berakas.
BD-BEBC Chairman Pengiran Haji Yura Kesteria bin Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran Dr Haji Mohd Yusof revealed this at a press conference yesterday.
BD-BEBC Event Manager Siti Kaprawi and representatives of member nations of BIMP-EAGA, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines attended the press conference.
The four-day event will feature various activities and programmes including cultural performances, exhibitions on cultural and traditional ceremonial items, cooking demonstrations and the sale of merchandise and products.
The main highlight will be the BIMP-EAGA Culinary Challenge 2017, which will be held throughout the event. Fifteen participants will be selected and three will be eliminated daily, with the final challenge set for July 30.
Siti explained that the competition is open to amateur cooks aged between 18 to 40, who will have their dishes judged by professional chefs. The six winners will have their recipes published in the ‘Fruits & Flowers in Cooling Cookbook’ at the end of the year.
All ingredients will be provided by the organisers, supplied by SKH, Supa Save and Brunei Halal. However, participants may bring a maximum of three of their own ingredients should they wish.
Participants are required to bring their kitchen equipment and utensils, such as a cutting board, knives, a pot and pan, hand towels, bowl and plates for cooking and serving.
The closing date for application is July 15, with the registration fee set at $20.
At the event, BIMP-EAGA invited guests and official members will also be given the opportunity to visit the Eco Ponies Garden Lamunin to learn more about herbal gardens, as well as to attend food demonstrations such as ‘Ayam Pansoh Sarawak,’ ‘Ikan Dalam Buloh,’ and ‘Ayam Masak Dalam Kelapa.’
The exhibition aims to promote traditional cultures in BIMP-EAGA, promote the traditional food and food tourism among BIMP-EAGA, as well as to enrich the community’s knowledge and experience about food, its nutrients and healthy living.
The expo sees collaboration between Brunei Tourism, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MoFAT), Cottage Youth Initiative Programme (CYiP), Youth Development Centre (PPB), Brunei Halal and BD-BEBC.
It is hoped that such event will contribute towards enhancing closer relations and economic cooperation not only among business organisations in BIMP-EAGA, but also between the governments and peoples in the region and beyond.
