FLOATING rubbish can be seen during high tide at the Brunei River, especially the river banks near Kianggeh Bridge in the capital.
A Borneo Bulletin reader yesterday expressed his dismay over the presence of rubbish at the edge of the riverbanks.
He said the problem can be overcome if the public do not throw their household rubbish into the river.
The Brunei River is a popular spot frequented by tourists visiting the Water Village.
He added that there is a private contractor and river rubbish collector using boats to pick up the floating household waste that continues to choke the river.
However, their efforts to keep the river environment clean may fail due to the attitude of indifference adopted by the community.
The authorities have also worked hard to solve the problem by organising various clean-up campaigns to keep the river free from floating waste and at the same time maintain the positive image of the Water Village, one of the country’s popular tourist attractions.
All hard work and initiatives are wasted if there is no cooperation from the community.
Every day, tonnes of household rubbish are collected from the river.
The contractor has also set up rubbish bins in the area for the public to throw their waste and also set up rubbish traps at strategic locations along the river.
