THE Community Development Department (JAPEM) yesterday held Doa Kesyukuran ceremonies across several mosques throughout the country to mark International Day of Older Persons, which has been celebrated by United Nations (UN) member states every October 1 since 1991.
The event is a show of appreciation for the essential role they play in a family, society, community and country, which is reflected in this year’s themed ‘Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talent, Contribution and Participation of Older Persons in Society.’
The celebration is also observed to raise awareness on issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and abuse,among others.
In the Brunei-Muara District, the ceremony played out at the Suri Seri Begawan Raja Pengiran Anak Damit Mosque in Kampong Madang, with Legislative Council (LegCo) member cum Mukim Berakas ‘B’ Penghulu YB Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon attending as the guest of honour.
Over 100 people comprising senior citizens, non-government organisations (NGOs) involved with senior citizens activities, mukim penghulus, and village heads attended the celebration, which commenced with the recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and Doa Kesyukuran led by Imam Haji Jufri bin Haji Abidin and Imam Nuzli bin Haji Jumat.
Mosque Affairs Officer Ustaz Muhammad Hanafi bin Haji Zaini delivered a Tazkirah titled ‘Masa itu Emas.’
In the Tutong District, the celebration – held at the Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque – commenced with a Tazkirah titled ‘Memanfaatkan Warga Emas’ delivered by Haji Mail bin Besar.
The religious talk also encouraged senior citizens to fill their time with beneficial activities such as performing doing good deeds and religious activities.
The recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and Doa Kesyukuran was led by Hazrin bin Haji Hassan, Bilal of Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque.
LegCo members YB Haji Umarali bin Esung and YB Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin, Tutong District Officer Shamsul Bahrin bin Haji Mohd Hussain and Tutong Municipal Board Acting Chairman Abdul Rahman bin Haji Apong attended the event alongside 100 guests comprising senior citizens, NGOs, mukim penghulus and village heads.
In the Belait District, the celebration was held at the STKRJ Lorong Tiga Selatan Seria Mosque.
STKRJ Lorong Tiga Selatan Seria Mosque Imam Shah Irwandy bin Samsudin led the recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and Doa Kesyukuran.
LegCo member cum guest of honour Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin joined over 200 guests at the celebration, which included a religious talk titled ‘Taubat’ delivered by Imam Shah Irwandy.
In the Temburong District, the ceremony was held at Utama Mohammad Salleh Mosque, seeing Temburong Assistant District Officer Haji Md Azmi bin Haji Suhaili attending as the guest of honour.
Fifty guests attended the event, which commenced with the recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and Doa Kesyukuran, followed by a Tazkirah titled ‘Mensyukuri Nikmat Allah’ delivered by Imam Haji Mohd Yusup bin Ahad.
