THE Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC), a social investment flagship of Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd (BSP), successfully hosted the final round of the OGDC Science Show Competition 2017 on November 26 at the Core Theatre, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). In attendance were senior officers from BSP and the government sector, principals, teachers, students, as well as members of the public.

The highly anticipated event saw a total of 11 teams coming in strong with their science shows. Elements such as accurate science facts, creativity and fun were shown by each team making the whole competition a lot more exciting and entertaining.

During the final round, 100 per cent of the marks came solely from the invited judges. The performance of the teams was assessed and judged by a panel of science experts from UBD namely; Dr Roslinawati binti Mohd Roslan, a science education lecturer at UBD; Dr Marliza binti Johari and Hajah Hardimah binti Haji Mohd Said – both Physics lecturers of UBD. The event then saw awards in the form of cash up to $700 and free Explor-a-saurus tickets being given to the first, second, and third place winners, as well as the best performer in both categories – Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary.

Winning first place in Upper Secondary category was Team Senior Young Scientists from St James’ School whereas bagging second and third place in the same category were Team Recycled Science from St Margaret’s School and Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School. In the Lower Secondary category, the first-place winner was Team Winology from Chung Ching Middle School (CCMS), whereas Team Junior Young Scientists from St Andrew’s School and St James’ School were awarded second and third place. The best performance award was given to Albert Chong Kim Seng in the Upper Secondary category, whereas in Lower Secondary category, the award was given to Ryan Chong Rui Ern.

The objectives of the OGDC Science Show competition was to stimulate the creativity and innovation within students and to produce ‘Young Science Ambassadors’ through inculcating the culture of science. This is in line with OGDC’s larger vision of advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Brunei Darussalam, especially among the younger generation.
