RESULTS from analysis of the Brunei Teacher Standards-Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) have shown that officers and staff at the Ministry of Education (MoE) still have work to do in terms of enhancing student engagement in learning intellectually and further developing their higher-order thinking skills, according to Deputy Permanent Secretary at the MoE, Nadia Lee Siew Hoon binti Abdullah.
The deputy permanent secretary was speaking during the Induction Programme for New Teachers course held for some 180 new teachers under the MoE yesterday.
“Some initiatives have been and are being implemented in this ministry to support this desire, and new teachers need to take this induction programme to continue expanding knowledge and expertise to deliver quality education to our students,” she said.
Nadia Lee Siew Hoon added that to achieve the vision and mission of the ministry, “We need to work together and take on bigger responsibilities collectively and in a collaborative manner, not only among teachers but also school leaders, cluster leaders and every department and division of this ministry.
“As an educator, I hope all teachers have understood the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21). Improving the students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is an important element in today’s global, 21st Century education,” she said.
“The ability to think laterally, solve problems, reason logically, and demonstrate critical thinking is the crucial foundation upon higher levels of creativity and innovation can be triggered,” added the deputy permanent secretary.
The MoE through its Human Resources Division, in collaboration with the Department of Schools, has held this induction programme throughout 2017. The programme which began yesterday will run for three days until tomorrow.
It is an exposure programme which provides participants introductory information on a career as a teacher and an overview of the MoE as well as an explanation of its policies and regulations.
