Tutong schools come under acting minister’s scrutiny

THE Acting Minister of Religious Affairs, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, continued his series of working visits with inspections of two educational institutions in the Tutong District yesterday.

The first visit was to Mahad Islam Brunei, where the acting minister and his delegation were welcomed by Ustaz Pengiran Haji Asmadi bin Pengiran Haji Aliuddin, the Principal of the college and Hajijah binti Haji Moktal, the Acting Director of the Islamic Studies Department (JPI).

During his tour of the college, the acting minister observed some Year 6 and 7 classes in session.

Mahad Islam Brunei has 69 academic staff members and 456 students in Year 5 to 11, with a 100 per cent passing rate in last year’s Primary School Assessment (PSR) examinations and an 88 per cent pass rate in the Brunei Religious Education Certificate (SPUB) examination.

In terms of co-curriculum activities, the college has made various accomplishments in the Crown Prince CIPTA Awards organised by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Brunei LNG, where it was placed fourth in Category 3 and fifth in the Smart Junior Competition.

The college also took second place in the National Dakwah Competition for Secondary Schools. It has also established an intervention programme from Monday to Thursday for teachers and students to improve their fluency in Arabic Language.

The college excelled in the Simulator Shooting Competition for the Royal Brunei Armed Forces’ (RBAF) Military Cadets in Secondary Schools and Colleges, where it was the overall champion in the male team category.

In the sporting area, the college has won medals in a basketball tournament for Brunei primary schools and a sepak takraw competition.

The acting minister visited Pengiran Anak Puteri Norain Religious School, where he was welcomed by Dayangku Mariam bin Pengiran Haji Mumin, the Headmistress of the school and the Acting Director of the JPI.

The school has 28 academic staff members and 383 students in pre-school to Year VI, with a 100 per cent passing rate in last year’s Religious Education Primary Schools Certificate (SSSRU) examination.

The overall student population in the Tutong District is 4,091, with the total number of teachers at 333.

Among the acting minister’s delegation were Haji Mohd Serudin bin Haji Timbang, the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Haji Roslan bin Haji Taja’ah, the Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administrative and Financial Affairs) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
