ESTABLISHMENT of programmes in the field of culture between Asean and Russia is expected to create more talented youths who will form the foundation of a productive society.

This was pointed out by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, during the recent meeting of culture ministers held on the sidelines of the 20th Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit in Sochi, Russia.

The minister highlighted that previous cultural activities such as the Asean-Russia Symphony of Young Musicians and the Cultural Programme in Folk Music and Dance, as well as exchange programmes between Brunei and Russia in visual arts in 2014 have provided opportunities for youths to understand the meaning of culture, inventiveness and creativity.

Therefore, preservation of cultural and historical heritage is important to be appreciated by the youth, added the minister.

Chaired by Vladimir Medinsky, the Russian Minister of Culture, the meeting was attended by culture ministers from Cambodia, Laos, Singapore and Thailand.

This was the first ministerial meeting on culture between Asean and the Russian Federation which aimed to strengthen friendship and broaden ties in culture and arts.

With regard to cooperation in culture and arts, Brunei has taken another step forward when the Sultanate and the Russian Federation signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to intensify the process of learning, exchange of information and experience in both fields.

The memorandum was signed by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi and Vladimir Medinsky on May 20.
