STALL operators at Tamu Selera have expressed concerns over the deteriorating sewage problem in the area, caused by an overflowing nearby sewage manhole that leaves a foul stench clinging in the air.
“It has been a month since the problem came up and despite our complaints to the authorities, no effective action has been taken.
“They only confirmed that a report had been made of the issue and that was it,” said a frustrated vendor.
“We have had municipal officers conducing nightly patrols in the area and fining us for littering and cleanliness issues but ignoring the real issue, which is the overflowing sewage.
“The problem has not only affected our business, but there are also incidences where passersby using the walkway leading to our stall have slipped,” the vendor added.
“We really hope that the investigation into the sewage overspill will be conducted more professionally, and realistic steps will be taken to prevent this problem from happening again. What’s worse is that this is not a new issue – it has been ongoing for the past few years.”
Another vendor added to the chorus of displeasure, “We are losing customers every day as people cannot bear the nauseating smell.
“Customers have also expressed their concern on the issue to us. We don’t need a temporary solution, but a more permanent one such as a new drainage system as well as better maintenance.”
Visitors to the food court also voiced their annoyance at the lack of action on the problem.
“Tamu Selera is supposed to be a place where one can settle down and enjoy a meal out with family or friends, but now we find it unpleasant to come here,” a customer told the Bulletin.
“We hope the authorities are able to address this issue before it spreads to the rest of the area.”
