THE Kampong Lubok Pulau (KOPEKLAP) Petrol Station tested the level of its staff’s readiness in dealing with emergency situations in a case of multi-level incidents yesterday.

The emergency drill was organised in cooperation with the Fire and Rescue Station, police, paramedics and the Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM). The drill also included staff members of in-the-station Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Restaurant and Drive-thru.

According to Mohd Khirul Anam bin Jenuddin, Assistant Operation Manager of the KOPEKLAP Station, the drill involved a main incident and two probable consequential incidents as a result of a panicky situation. The main incident involved a car that was engulfed in fire due to overfilling.

In the consequential incidents, a customer at the KFC Drive-thru who was looking at the previous incident had crashed his car into the drive-thru ordering post, hit his head on the steering wheel and became unconscious. The second consequential incident involved a dine-in KFC customer, who was also looking at the fire and had choked, needing an emergency response.

According to the Workplace Safety Order 2009, the management and staff of KOPEKLAP Petrol Station must bear in mind the safety of customers at the station and at KFC at all times.

We have also trained the KFC staff in fire-fighting techniques and periodically update them regarding the latest safety procedures and measures.”

He said the station will conduct regular internal and external exercises together with agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Brunei Police Force, paramedics and BSM.

Thirteen staff members from the station and KFC participated in the exercise, with personnel from the Tutong Fire Station, Tutong District Police Station and paramedics from the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital.

Also present during the exercise were personnel from BSM, led by Pengiran Haji Shariful bin Pengiran Seri Indera Pengiran Haji Ismail, BSM Retail Compliance Executive; Haji Hussain Mahari, KOPEKLAP Chairman, and other executives from KOPEKLAP.
