DATO Paduka Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Jaafar, the Minister of Health, took to the streets in the heart of the capital yesterday morning to distribute booklets on cancer prevention during the World Cancer Day 2018 roadshow.
Organised by the Ministry of Health (MoH) through its Health Promotion Centre and The Brunei Cancer Centre in conjunction with World Cancer Day which falls on every February 4, the World Cancer Day 2018 roadshow aimed to remind the public of the importance of practising a healthy lifestyle and raise their awareness on ways to reduce the burden of cancer sufferers in the community as well as letting them know that cancer can be prevented.
Joining the roadshow were Datin Dr Noraslinah binti Haji Ramlee, the spouse of the Minister of Health, along with senior officials from the ministry.
On average, about 600 people are diagnosed with cancer in Brunei Darussalam every year. The top three most common cancers among men were bowel, lung and prostate cancer, whereas breast, bowel and cervical cancer were the commonest among women.
In 2016 alone, Brunei saw 353 deaths from cancer, which accounts for more than 20 per cent of total deaths in the country. Before heading to the streets to distribute the booklets, Dato Paduka Dr Haji Mohd Isham joined the early morning warm up aerobic exercise.
During the roadshow, medical officers were present to answer public enquiries about cancer at a coffee session. The public also were able to interact with the officers to gain more knowledge about cancer and issues related with the disease.
MoH hoped that the public will make use of the knowledge learnt from the roadshow and share it with their family members, friends and acquaintances.
