MORE than 1,000 people from all walks of life including special needs individuals came together to run for a noble cause at the Every Child is a Gift (Anak Adalah Anugerah) Charity Run yesterday morning at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Held in conjunction with International Day of Persons with Disabilities that falls on December 3 every year, the charity run – which runs in parallel with Bandarku Ceria – was organised by the Special Education Unit (SEU) of the Ministry of Education (MoE) to raise funds for students with special needs.
Present at the run as the guest of honour was Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education.
The minister joined the pre-run warm up exercises and participated in the 1.5km walk/run category with special needs students.
Also joining the run were Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, the Deputy Minister of Education; Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education; and other officials from the ministry.
A total of $31,586.85 was collected from the charity run, with the Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) and the Brunei Darussalam Paralympic Council each receiving a total of $1,479.31 during a post race prize presentation ceremony.
As for the performance of the runners, Aliakbar bin Ali Hashim crossed the finish line first in the 5km men’s open to claim first place. In second place was Chong Horng Long, while Lim Hock Chai took third spot.
Julis Durston won the 5km ladies’ open, followed by Marnie Farizan binti Haji Ahmad in second place and Cecilia Masimon in third place.
In the boys’ special needs student 5km category, Muhd Ikhwan Mustaqeem bin Muhd Shahardie took first spot, followed by Md Fakhrul Ruddin bin Haji Awang in second place and Muhd Waie bin Erwan in third.
For the girls’ special needs student category, Nurul Asyura Basirah binti Md Alimin won first place. Second place was won by Nurul Rabiatul Nabilah binti Haji Johsrinizam, while third place went to Nornazurah binti Mohd Rodzie.
