DESPITE the uncertain weather, thousands gathered yesterday at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien to celebrate the 34th National Day.
Just beyond the Taman, a bazaar offered hungry visitors an assortment of food and drinks.
For Omar bin Alitdin, the celebration provided the opportunity to make an extra income. With no more than a cart and a drinks-filled cooler, he made his rounds, quenching the thirst of dozens who had turned up to be part of the grand event.
“This is my fourth time participating in such activity,” he shared, adding that moving around with his cart ensured that he could reach different crowds, providing both spectators and participants a chance to hydrate themselves.
Meanwhile, for vendor Muhd Ridzwan, it was a chance to try his hands at entrepreneurship.
“It’s a joy to watch people enjoying the food we prepare, ranging from grilled meat to finger food,” Muhd Ridzwan said.
Some vendors showed up as early as 4am to secure the best spots and to prepare for the wave of roaming visitors.
Haji Zulhaji bin Haji Ahmad shared that he arrived at 3.30am to lay out the fruits – which included local favourites such as Rambutan, Nangka and Langsat; and unique varieties such as Pulasan and Buah Sumpit – at his stall.
“It is rare for National Day to coincide with the fruit season. It’s also a chance for visitors, especially the younger generation, to enjoy the fruitful bounty of fruits like the Pulasan and Buah Sumpit.”
