THE science show workshop organised by the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) for Master of Teaching (MTeach) students of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) concluded yesterday.
Participants underwent a two-day workshop to understand the concept of educating with a different approach practiced by OGDC. The Informal Science Learning (ISL) approach aims to make teaching science more interactive and engaging for students.
Nur Karnina binti Karim, the Acting Head of OGDC and Albert Chang, Senior Science Communicator of OGDC led the workshop.
Hajah Nur’iffah Itqan Zawanah binti Haji Hasbullah, a parent and former Research Assistant of UBD, said, “I was surprised that the students had only two days to prepare for their shows, it was as if they practised for weeks.”
Nurfadhilah binti Haji Osman, an education officer who participated in the workshop felt that all teachers should go for science show training.
“Some teachers can find it challenging to be animated and to interact with students. Not all students have the privilege to visit the main science centre, I believe that it is part of our job to bring science to them,” Nurfadhilah said.
Muhammad Syafiq bin Harun, a Master of Teaching student who participated in the workshop said a science show is something new to him and it was an additional tool that he can implement in his teaching.
Dr Marliza binti Johari, a physics lecturer at UBD, felt that the workshop encouraged the students to think outside the box and tap their creativity in terms of presentation of content.
“They also learnt the importance of using effective questioning and the usage of simple explanations to deliver their points across,” she said.
