THREE Bruneians, Hadi Iskandar bin Abdul Razak, Jeffrey Ang Meng Ann and Koh Hui Zhen, will be heading to Japan on April 1 to further their studies for two years under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship Prog-ramme.
Muhd Hadi Iskandar will be taking a Master’s Degree in Energy Engineering at Gifu University and Jeffrey Ang will be studying for a PhD in Biosphere at the University of Tokyo, while Koh Hui Zhen will be pursuing a Master’s in Fine Arts at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
Motohiko Kato, the Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, hosted a send-off ceremony for the students yesterday. In attendance was Hajah Najmina binti Haji Abdul Latif, the President of the Brunei Association of Japan Alumni (BAJA).
Kato advised the students to visit various places in Japan, especially the rural countryside, and make new friends there. Koh Hui Zhen, the founder Juste Leather, a local business specialising in leather handicrafts, told the Bulletin, “The Tokyo University of the Arts has extensive craft courses, which I am interested in, since Japan is one of those countries that still preserves its traditional arts.”
She also thanked the Government of Japan for allowing her the opportunity to further her studies.
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study graduate-level courses at Japanese universities as research students, under the Monbukagakusho Scholarship, for 2018.
The scholarship aims to foster human resources through studying in Japan.
The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam will be accepting applications for the Monbukagakusho Scholarship for 2019, towards the end of April.
Details of the scholarship are available on the embassy’s website.
