THE streets of Kuala Belait became pitch black for one hour as the majority of the lights were switched off to mark this year’s Earth Hour.

The Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is observed annually on March 24 to help raise awareness on the importance of saving energy, while showing commitment to saving the planet.

KB Sentral Shopping Centre management marked the occasion by lighting candles arranged in a representation of the Earth Hour logo, and invited the public to participate.

V-Plaza Hotel also had most of their exterior floor lights and interior lights turned off, with candles and mood lighting decorating the hotel’s interior areas.

Several stores also switched off many non-essential lights, delivering a unique experience to their customers. Burger King Brunei, Kuala Belait branch saw customers greeted by a darkened restaurant lit with candles set up by the establishment.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board conducted a night walk, with the starting and finish line at the recreational park located along Jalan Sungai, Kuala Belait in conjunction with Earth Hour 2018.

The night walk, organised by the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board, with support from RYS Entertainment, saw more than 200 participants, who followed a planned route stretching over four kilometres, passing through local landmarks throughout Pekan Belait.

The participants included a number of mukim penghulus and village heads, as well as heads of department and companies based in the Belait District.

The one-hour night walk saw participants using their glow sticks and the headlights of police cars illuminating the way, as they completed the walk. The Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board also announced the dates for this month’s Kuala Belaitku Ceria, which is held on the night of March 31, and will continue into the morning of April 1.
