Prince Mateen makes green call in London

HIS Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen underscored the importance of forest conservation as an important strategy in limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

Delivering the keynote address on the efforts and contributions of the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in addressing climate change at an event titled ‘A Celebration of Brunei’s Rainforests’, which was held on Thursday evening at the Royal Geographical Society in London, United Kingdom, His Royal Highness underlined the importance of protecting the flora and fauna in the rainforest and shared Brunei Darussalam’s efforts in this area.

His Royal Highness was greeted on arrival by Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II; Haji Mohammed Rosli bin Haji Ibrahim, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office; Alasdair Macleod, Head of Enterprise and Resources at the Royal Geographical Society; and Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

His Royal Highness was invited to sign the visitor’s book and presented with a pesambah by Alasdair Macleod. His Royal Highness then proceeded to a meet-and-greet and group photograph session with members of the panel presenting on the sustainability and biodiversity of Brunei Darussalam’s rainforests.

His Royal Highness was later ushered to the Education Centre at the Royal Geographical Society.

The event began with welcoming remarks by Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Erywan, followed by His Royal Highness’ keynote address.

Prior to departure, His Royal Highness watched a video presentation on ‘Brunei Darussalam: A Biodiversity Hotspot’.

‘A Celebration of Brunei’s Rainforests’ was hosted by the High Commission of Brunei Darussalam in London, in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Brunei Darussalam and Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

The commemorative event was organised to promote Brunei Darussalam’s forests as an internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Brunei Rainforest Project, a 14-month expedition conducted during 1991-1992.

The project was jointly organised by Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Royal Geographical Society to survey the undisturbed lowland primary rainforests in the Temburong District, which led to the formation of the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre.
