MINISTER of Health Dato Paduka Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Jaafar joined other health ministers and leaders from across the globe in the third Health Ministers’ Patient Safety Summit held in Tokyo, Japan recently, charting the way towards enhancing and protecting healthcare and safety of patients worldwide.
A total of 17 Health Ministers and representatives from 42 countries and other related organisations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank converged in the two-day summit that concluded yesterday, according to a press release by the Ministry of Health (MoH).
During the summit, Dato Paduka Dr Haji Mohd Isham attended an expert session that gave health specialists the platform to exchange their views and share their experiences, particularly in the field of patient safety from different perspectives including Patient Safety Culture, Patient Safety in Ageing Society, Patient Safety Needs for Achieving Universal Health Care in Low and Middle-income Countries and also Economics of Patient Safety.
The minister during a roundtable session of the Ministerial Summit shared details on Brunei Darussalam’s healthcare system and the country’s achievements in ensuring the safety of patients.
Following the successful conclusion of the summit, the ‘Tokyo Declaration on Patient Safety’ was endorsed, which is envisioned to strengthen the commitment on the Global Action on Patient Safety by prioritising patient safety in the health sectors’ policies and programmes, as well as in enhancing efforts to achieve a universal health coverage.
The declaration also calls for the commitment to create a safe and transparent culture, educating and training the workforce in patient safety care as well as in imparting knowledge on best-practices and successful models.
The declaration also supported the observation of World Patient Safety Day on September 17 annually.
