IT IS obligatory for every eligible Muslim to pay Zakat (tithe). Zakat can be divided into two namely Zakat Harta (property tithe) and Zakat Fitrah.
Following this, the Brunei Islamic Religious Council in their press release stated the rates of Zakat Fitrah for each individual whose staple food is fragrant rice (Beras Wangi) is BND2.84 per kilogramme, while the tithe rates for Siam rice (Beras Siam) is BND1.93 per kilogramme.
For this year, 310 Amils (tithe collectors) have been assigned to 138 areas across the country. In the Brunei-Muara District, 173 Amils will collect the Zakat in 79 areas; in Tutong District, 48 Amils have been appointed to 28 areas; in Temburong District there will be 25 Amils appointed for 12 areas; while 23 Amils assigned to 15 areas in the Belait District.
Meanwhile, 41 Amils have been appointed by the Brunei Islamic Religious Council in four Zakat collection areas comprising officers and staff members of the department.
The Zakat collections are held at designated mosques, suraus, religious halls, the homes of Amils representatives (penghulus and village heads), and all branches of the Zakat Collection and Distribution Office across Brunei.
While for Zakat Harta, Perbadanan Tabung Amanah Islam Brunei (TAIB) and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) have also been appointed as Amil representatives.
