THREE students and one chaperone teacher from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (Maktab Sains) yesterday left for Singapore to participate in the 6th Singapore International Mathematics Challenge 2018 (SIMC).
The students are Darren Pui Wei Zhi, Nur Farahiya Husna binti Ali Omar, and Lim Yun Qi, while the accompanying teacher is Cikgu Noraizamley bin Haji Damit.
Maktab Sains Principal Susilawati binti Dato Paduka Haji Muhammad bid the delegation farewell at the Brunei International Airport.
The SIMC, organised by the Ministry of Education, Singapore with the support of the Temasek Education Foundation, takes place at the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (NUS High School) from today to May 25.
It is a biennial international mathematics event serving as a platform to spark students’ interest in mathematics and gather bright mathematics students from around the world to pit their skills against one another in a rigorous competition to allow them the chance to demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills through a mathematical modelling challenge.
For educators, the SIMC acts as a platform for the professional exchange of good practices in mathematics education across different countries through the Educators’ programme. It also provides opportunities for participating principals to engage in professional discourse and to establish further ties with their counterparts from schools around the world.
The Chief Judge for the SIMC 2018 challenge will be Professor Imre Bennett Leader from Trinity College, Cambridge University, who will lead a panel of distinguished judges comprising professionals from various universities, research institutes and scientific organisations.
While the students are busy with the challenge, the principals and teachers will be involved in symposiums and workshops held on the sidelines of the main event.
This is not the first time Maktab Sains is participating in the SIMC. The school previously sent student representatives for the 2012, 2014 and 2016 editions of the competition.
During their stay in Singapore, the students will take part in city tours, seminars, experience-sharing sessions with their peers, and other social and cultural activities.
