THE Faculty of Islamic Economics and Finance (FEKIm) at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) recently conducted a Waqaf Roundtable Discussion (RTDW) in two series with the collaboration of Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD).
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs and the Deputy Chairman of the AMBD Board of Directors, was among the attendees at one of the RTDW talks.
Attended by representatives from government and private agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and higher learning institutions, the first discussion was held on April 25-28 while the second took place on May 9-12.
The Dean of FEKIm and Chairman of the RTDW, Dr Abdul Nasir bin Haji Abdul Rani, said in his welcoming remarks the discussion was intended to provide a variety of perspectives for academicians, policymakers and Waqaf coordinators.
“It is a venue for the exchange of ideas and views, in addition to exploring methods for the consolidation of Waqaf,” he said.
During the RTDW, 11 working papers were presented and discussed by academicians and local industry practitioners, as well as invited guests from Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
Among the topics presented were Waqaf and the Provisions of Law in the Islamic Religious Council Act Chapter 84: Its Current Role and Potential; Waqaf Introduction and History in Indonesia; Issues on Waqaf Land in Brunei Darussalam; and Issues on Waqaf Property from the Finance and Accounting Perspective. Also presented were topics on Challenges of Waqaf Property Development: Waqaf Experience of An-Nur Corporation Bhd Malaysia; Waqaf Direction in Achieving Brunei Vision 2035; Waqaf as Alternative Funding to Achieve Brunei Vision 2035; Empowerment of Waqaf Property; Waqaf Administration in Singapore; and Waqaf in Malaysia: Waqaf Management by Yayasan Waqaf Malaysia.
The joint UNISSA-AMBD initiative managed to devise a strategy for the consolidation of Waqaf as one of the premium Islamic finance mechanisms in achieving Brunei Vision 2035.
