IN HIS special talk on ‘Professional and Trustworthy Teachers’, the Acting Ra’es of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), Dr Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar described the varied roles of teachers as educators and mentors.
“The knowledge that they impart must be accurate, beneficial and precise, derived from proper sources,” he said. “Teachers will need to read a lot, including mastering the subject syllabus and teaching the students according to the appointed curriculum.
“As Mu’allim (educators), they are required to explain the main goal of the lesson and linking it to the students’ daily routines.
“Teachers should also adopt strategic and applicable methods to make their instructions more meaningful, in line with the desired objective.”
He also explained the teacher’s role as a Murabbi (mentor).
“The students should be treated as our own children or siblings. We should prioritise their welfare and assist them with full dedication.
“Teachers must always seek ways to increase their knowledge and skills, in order to improve their teaching efficiency. They should also be sensitive to the developments of their profession, without neglecting their obligations towards the rest of society.”
Dr Haji Adanan also urged educators to cultivate their professional skills and enhance their emotional intelligence, in line with the goals of Brunei Vision 2035.
“As nation-builders, teachers play a role in the establishment of society and in the country’s development,” he said.
“Teachers should be able to adapt to any situation, including the challenges of globalisation, in working together to produce a morally upright and ethical community.”
