ONE of the goals of Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Student Affairs Division (HEP) is to spread goodwill and reach out to villagers and communities surrounding its campus, as well as society at large.

Thus during this holy month of Ramadhan, in true homage to this spirit of caring and giving, the HEP – through its Spiritual and Community Service Unit in collaboration with the Executive Community Service and Student Welfare (ECS) and the Executive Religious and Spiritual (EKK) – is running a social responsibility initiative dubbed the ‘Caring Mission.’

The mission will include the distribution of necessities such as basic food items and clothing to the poor, a charity bazaar, as well as a garage sale for Rohingya refugees. These activities fall under HEP’s Ihya Ramadhan Programme 2018 (1439H).

The Caring Mission initiative, whose objective is to imbue a sense of care for others, will see basic necessities such as rice, cooking oil, sugar, canned food, drinks, clothing such as baju kurung and cara Melayu, and other items being collected and distributed to the poor to help ease their financial hardship during Ramadhan.

Speaking to the Sunday Bulletin, Dayangku Siti Norainul Fathni binti Pengiran Haji Tajuddin, a religious officer at the HEP, explained that the division is hoping to assemble at least 50 volunteers from within UBD and the outside community for the mission.

“We hope to organise a collection of basic items soon for fellow UBDians, from Monday to Thursday (June 4-7) at the UBD Chancellor Hall from 11am to 3pm. The distribution for the collected items will be done on either June 9 and 10 or June 11 and 12, from 2pm to 5pm at the UBD Chancellor Hall,” she said.

She noted that a list of donation recipients – comprised of residents from the surrounding areas of UBD such as Rimba – has been drawn up with assistance from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

“The plan is for the recipients to come to the UBD Chancellor Hall to choose their clothing and collect the basic items or we will have our volunteers fetch them from their homes to the hall. For those unable to come to the collection venue, we will deliver the contributions to their houses,” she noted.

The religious officer added that, the donation drive is a big effort on HEP’s part as it will largely involve only UBD students.

“This year we’ll be focussing only on needy residents around UBD,” Dayangku Siti Norainul Fathni said, adding that “the main aim is for UBD to show that it cares about and wants to make a positive impact on communities surrounding the campus.”

The charity bazaar will be held alongside the garage sale for the Rohingya refugees from June 4 to 7, from 10am to 3pm, at the UBD Chancellor Hall. Vendors can rent a booth at the bazaar.

All rental proceeds will be funnelled towards the donation for the needy in Brunei Darussalam, while proceeds from the garage sale will be handed over to the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) to be used in aid efforts for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
