EIGHT individuals under the Brunei Government Scholarship Scheme completed their air traffic training at the Malaysian Aviation Academy (MAVA) on June 7, according to the Ministry of Communications (MinCom).
The Air Traffic Officer Scholarship recipients underwent a six-month course in Malaysia focussed on basic air traffic control and management, under an agreement between the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and the Scholarship Section of the Ministry of Education (MoE).
MinCom said the scheme is part of DCA’s initiative to provide ample air traffic officers in the country, in line with the objective to ensure the safety of aviation and the public.
They must undergo specialised air traffic training to become qualified air traffic officers, and the duration of the programme depends on their capabilities. Apart from theoretical training, they also need to have practical training and take a written and efficiency test.
As part of the second phase of their training, the scholars will do further training at the Brunei Air Traffic Control Centre for another six months and eventually become licensed air traffic officers by the end of the training.
MinCom added that scholars who successfully obtain their licences in the stipulated period will be offered permanent posts as air traffic officers of the DCA’s Air Traffic Services Section.
