STUDENTS should maintain their fluency in reciting the Al-Quran, even after completing their Year 6 studies in religious schools.
This was said by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education, on the sidelines of an annual Tedarus event held yesterday at the Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School (SMPJN) in Kuala Belait.
“There are several whom we noticed are still lacking in their reciting fluency, so we urge students to continue mastering the Al-Quran, even though they have already completed their studies at religious school,” said the minister, adding that Ramadhan poses a great opportunity to do so because Muslims are encouraged to fill the holy month with devotional activities, such as regular recitals of the Quran.
When asked how the students could manage both their studies and activities during the fasting month, the minister replied that with the academic schedule ending at 12pm during Ramadhan, students should be able to carry out their studies as normal in the morning and fill their afternoons with religious activities.
Towards the end of the interview, the minister advised students to watch their health during Ramadhan, by making sure that they consumed enough food during Sahur and Sungkai hours.
“Insya Allah, the students should be in good condition, as long as they bear in mind that they should not overeat,” he said. “Fasting, when done properly, should not bring about health problems, but actually enhance one’s health.”
During the event, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi made a charitable contribution in the form of two rolls of carpet, three rolls of saprah (table cloth) and 15 rehal (Al-Quran stands) to Saidin Hidayat bin Abdullah Lasit, the Deputy Principal (Academic) of SMPJN.
Around 150 students were present during the Tedarus event co-hosted by the Department of Schools, the Higher Education Division and the Private Institutions Section of the Ministry of Education.
Also among those in attendance were Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Education; Dr Haji Junaidi bin Haji Abdul Rahman, the Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the Ministry of Education; Associate Professor, Dr Azman bin Ahmad, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education; and Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, the Director-General of Education.
