Brunei powerlifters set world record at Selangor meet

BRUNEI Darussalam’s Abdul Hakim Idzharudin and Abdul Mateen Amirrudin set new world records in a show of strength and power at the Malaysia Powerlifting Alliance (MPA) Strength Assembly Meet (SAM) 2018 at the Jaya Shopping Centre in Selangor recently.

Abdul Hakim clinched the gold medal in the under-60kg and secured first place in the overall male lifter en route to world records in the under-60kg sleeveless division in squat at 155kg and deadlift at 260kg.

His counterpart 18-year old Abdul Mateen Amirrudin also shone with two world records in two lifts in the sub-junior deadlift at 180kg. He also recorded 112.5kg squad in the sleeveless sub-junior for under-60kg in the 18-19 years age category.

A group of 23 youths from Brunei Darussalam took part in the two-day event. The group, named Brulliance, comprised 18 lifters and was accompanied by five coaches or handlers.

The Strength Assembly Meet athletes also included gold medallists Muhd Syazwan Roslee in under 67.5kg event, Bazilah Junaidi in the under-52kg event and Rofini Zainal in the under-75kg event.

Rofini also placed second in the overall female lifter while Bazilah took third place in her division.

Muhd Iskandar Shah won the silver medal in the under-75kg while the bronze medallists comprised of Najmi Najmuddin, Abdul Wafi Haji Kamri, Batrisyia Junaidi and Muhd Ongyod.

Other Brulliance representatives included Muhd Suhail Muhd Suaib, Wan Abdul Khaliq Habib, Kevin On, Abd Rahim Harun, Fuad Ali, Muhd Badi’uzzaman Abdul Latiff, Mohd Akbar Hikmah and Mohd Nur Ariffin.

The coaches or handlers representing Brulliance were Abdul Aziz Kamalrudzman, Adi Syazwan Zuliskandar, Abdul Aziz Salleh, Qawiem Yacob and Fauzan Yahyah.

Malaysia Powerlifting Alliance (MPA) is the leading powerlifting competition organiser and platform in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. MPA SAM has been organised for the 4th year and is one of the main powerlifting competitions in the annual series.

This year’s MPA SAM has drawn participation of lifters from Malaysia, Australia, Brunei, Netherlands, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand, and the Philippines.
