A GROUP of six students led by their supervising teacher, Nur Afiqah binti Haji Sahminan from the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School (YSHHB) yesterday departed for Singapore to participate in the Youth. Leverage Educate Actuate Develop (Y.LEAD) Seminar: Leading Change in the Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) World.

Y.LEAD 2016 is organised by River Valley High School in Singapore, to be held from July 18-22. Around 30 schools will participate in the seminar. Sixteen of the schools are from Singapore and 14 are from countries such as Japan, USA, China, Korea, Malaysia and Brunei.

The seminar aims to equip students with value-based leadership skills, provide a platform for the internationalisation of both local and regional young leaders and provide networking opportunities for local and regional young leaders for future collaborations.

During the seminar, senior officers of the public service, industry leaders and representatives of non-governmental organisations will interact with participants to elucidate on their roles as leaders of their respective organisations. As part of the seminar, participants will undergo a specially tailored experiential Leadership-Character Development Programme developed by River Valley High School, Singapore.

The customised activities will not only enhance participants’ leadership qualities, but also provide them with opportunities to build friendships with other Asian student leaders, learn to respect one another and cultivate a stronger sense of appreciation, responsibility, self-discipline and self-motivation.

There will also be strong emphasis on the inculcation of values, in line with the aim to nurture leaders who make morally sound decisions that are beneficial to others.

Furthermore, participants will take part in customised programmes and visit key installations that forms part of Singapore’s strategic plan to keep the country progressive and competitive while maintaining social harmony and retaining a shared heritage.

In addition, participants will take part in an immersive role-play activity to be carried out over 15 hours, in groups of 15 where participants have to put the knowledge, skills and processes they have acquired over the previous days to formulate an action plan, deploy their resources and strategise to maximise their effectiveness as they work on their 15-minute presentation.

Present to send the students off the students yesterday were Haji Puasa bin Haji Jumat, Assistant Managing Director II of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah; Hajah Donnaliza binti Abdullah Puasa, Assistant Managing Director III of Yayasan; Dayangku Hajah Asiah binti Pengiran Haji Damit, Acting CEO of YSHHB Secondary School; and Marivic Co Collantes, the Acting Principal of YSHHB Secondary School and other senior masters of YSHHB School.
