HER Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah yesterday joined other Jerudong International School (JIS) Year 6 students on a trip to Muara Beach.

According to JIS, the Year 6 students took part in activities by the beach that were designed to give them the opportunity to relate to the characters in the story, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo which they are currently studying.

Their activities included walking on the beach and catching crabs, building mini-shelters, creating sand-art using Japanese characters, learning to tie nautical knots and roasting marshmallows over a beach bonfire.

JIS said such activity allows its students to explore firsthand the activities mentioned in the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom and will provide inspiration that will be helpful for their future writing.

Years 5 and 6 Phase Leader John Baker said, “Educational visits such as this provide unique opportunities for learning to take place outside the classrooms. Students learn through a variety of hand-on activities that wouldn’t be possible at school. In this case, the trip allowed the children to really empathise with the main characters in the story, which will benefit the fictional writing they will go on to produce.”

Head of JIS Junior School Paul Bannister added, “We are fortunate to be able to support our learning through the fantastic natural environment in Brunei. Bringing alive classroom learning, in this case being able to immerse themselves in a ‘castaway’ scenario, really enhances the children’s understanding of the themes covered.”
