A COMMITMENT to save and preserve endangered wildlife was made at the recent ‘Unite for Wildlife’ event by its chairperson Mohammad Izzie bin Hisham.
The event, organised in collaboration with BruWild and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Spectacle 2019, aimed to generate a sense of awareness among the public on the importance of mitigating the risks of losing endangered species and enhancing the environment for the sake of life on the planet.
Mohammad Izzie and his team of graduates from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UBD also welcomed the guest of honour Dean of UBD’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Hajah Asiyah Az-Zahra binti Haji Ahmad Kumpoh.
“The event is held to achieve our goals, which is to be knowledgeable about the issue of endangered animals in Borneo – specifically sea turtles and proboscis monkeys – and to find ways to save their habitat through the conservation of the environment such as reducing waste, and lastly to promote non-governmental organisations such as BruWild and Spectacle 2019 to the public,” Mohammad Izzie said.
He added that in an attempt to achieve these goals, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences team had completed preparations for the event within a span of four weeks.
“Within these four weeks we managed to create authentic artworks and decorations for the event, and also carried out an interactive and informative session with the event committees and one of our collaborators BruWild, to gain more knowledge on these endangered species,” the chairperson said.
Mohammad Izzie highlighted that the ‘Unite for Wildlife’ team intends to use this knowledge and create more awareness among UBD students and the wider public on the issue.
The highlights of the event included the ‘Race Against Extinction’ simulation game, which consisted of mini activities depicting the experiences of wild animals living in an environment that is being rapidly destroyed.
There was also an art gallery showcasing various artworks created by the UBD Spectacle 2019 team, made using recyclable materials to depict nature’s beauty, as well as a talk by BruWild focussing on the diversity of marine life and land animals in Borneo.
