THE Land Transport Department (JPD) of the Ministry of Communications notified the public – particularly those who wish to renew their driving licence – that its JPD branches and post office branches faced technical disruptions in their system to print microchip-less driving licence cards, which was scheduled to begin today.

“In connection with this, the post office branches will not receive any renewal of driving licence applications temporarily. Application can be made at all JPD branches across all four districts. The JPD will issue a receipt for new driving licence applicants and for those who renew their driving licences,” said Acting Director at the JPD Pengiran Mohamed Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud at a press briefing yesterday.

However, applications will start tomorrow for JPD branches and nine post office branches – the Mail Processing Centre/MPC, Seria Post Office, Lumut Post Office, Tutong Post Office, Sengkurong Post Office, Batu Satu Post Office, Menglait Post Office, Muara Post Office and Kuala Belait Post Office.

For inquiries, contact the Corporate and Public Relations Division of JPD during working hours at 2451979/2451980 (ext 107), 2420846, Darussalam line at 123 or e-mail info@land-transport.gov.bn.

With regard to why the previous driver’s licence carried a chip, Pengiran Mohamed Amirrizal explained that it had been used as a means to store information.

“However, as practised regionally and internationally, driving licences are now chipless. Instead, information is now stored through barcode. This is an international practice,” he added.

To ensure motorists are not faced with difficulties during roadblocks or when travelling by land to neighbouring countries, JPD has informed the relevant agencies, both local and in neighbouring countries, on the matter, said Pengiran Mohamed Amirrizal.
