THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) will work together with the surfing association in its efforts to support and promote surfing in the country.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin said this during the prize presentation ceremony of the Surfing competition organised by The Collective Art Events and Empat Co at Tungku Beach yesterday.
Some 16 surfers competed in the tournament – divided into four heats. Ely emerged champion of the competition; followed by Toon Siew as the runner-up and Izzi Adi in third place.
“Personally I see the uniqueness of the sport. We have encouraged youth (in Brunei) to participate in different sports and we applaud the organisers and the Brunei Darussalam Yachting Association in developing the sport,” the minister said.
“I do see potential in this sport and the ministry will support surfing and will work together with the association in promoting this sport,” he added.

With the emerging of this new trend among youth, the minister believed that Bruneians can go on to compete at international level.
“I’m glad that this sport is popular in Brunei and hope one day we will have surfers who can compete in international levels,” the minister said.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports presented the prizes.
The competition also served as a selection process to choose potential surfers to represent Brunei in future competitions regionally and internationally. The upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2019 in the Philippines is introducing Surfing as one of the sports to be competed.
