STUDENTS of Chung Ching Middle School participated in a Spring Couplet Making Competition at the school’s multi-purpose hall on January 26 to help provide an insight into the traditions and cultural significance of the Chinese New Year celebration, which will be observed on February 5.
The competition saw over 125 primary and 215 secondary students competing in two categories – for non-Chinese and Chinese students.
Present to oversee the competition were Principal Dr Ang Sik Liong, Vice Chairman I of the school’s Board of Governors Chua Teng Siong, Vice Chairman II of the school’s Board of Governors Lim Thian Ming, members of the school’s Board of Governors and the permanent honorary chairman of the school’s Board of Governors.
Prior to the start of the competition, students observed the techniques used in Chinese calligraphy, demonstrated by judges with background experience in the art of Chinese calligraphy. The students used the techniques learnt to make Spring Couplet (or Chunlian) comprising four to seven characters long poem normally written on long strips of red paper.
The red papers are hung around the edges of the front door during Chinese New Year to celebrate the beauty of nature or expressing wishes for a happy and prosperous future.
The best students were awarded certificates and prizes.
