INTERNATIONAL School Brunei (ISB) students showcased their talents in their first ever musical Breakin’ Out! at the ISB Sungai Hanching campus yesterday.
Attending the performance were Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah binti Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.
Breakin’ Out! culminated from the ISB Drama Department’s, led by Dawn Smith, desire to put on a Hip Hop themed musical extravaganza for the year’s secondary production.
Taking inspiration from Brunei’s own production company, Relentless Entertainment’s ‘scene-and-a-song’ formula, the team wrote their own rough plot, using adaptations of classic Hip Hop tunes and witty dialogues.
Over 80 students auditioned in September last year and 34 students were selected, with cameo roles of two teachers. After months of rehearsals, the musical opened to the public on February 18 and February 20, both nights selling out.
Set in an inner-city New York neighbourhood in the 1980’s, Breakin’ Out! follows the lives of a group of teenagers in a failing school and their teacher, Mr Silverman, who endears himself to his students by using Hip Hop as a tool to inspire.
Facing blowback, criticism and a little praise from multiple directions, the uncanny group of misfits is forced to navigate through difficult circumstances to save each other, and their school.
