THE Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA) kicked off its Marine Career Open Day Roadshow at the Institute of Brunei Technical Education Jefri Bolkiah Campus (IBTE JBC) on Wednesday.

Part of the academy’s efforts to showcase the various career opportunities at sea, the two-day event was open to prospective students. It gathered ‘Marine Industries Stakeholders’ and ‘Business Partners’ to create public awareness of “life at sea” as seafarers and promoted among Bruneians the maritime careers, opportunities and training available within the country.

Held in collaboration with Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP), Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC), and Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) and Marine Network companies in the country, the open day also served to help in delivering ‘In-Country Value in Brunei,’ by facilitating closer cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Transport and Info-communication.

Speaking to the Bulletin Marine HSSE and QMS Advisor at BSP Nazrul Syukri bin Haji Zainuddin explained that the roadshow aimed to showcase to students the opportunities available in the marine industry and efforts taken to develop the industry further.

“I hope the prospective students use the opportunity to get involved in the industry,” he said.

Several booths from a number of companies and agencies disseminating information on seafaring in Brunei and how it complements the country’s various other industries, especially oil and gas, were set up at the roadshow.

There was also a seafarer awareness talk entitled ‘Life at Sea’ by two BGC representatives, Captain Mohd Zuraime Waqiyuddin bin Haji Suhaimi and Chief Engineer Riley Hon, as well as Chief Engineer Ashrah Azwar, a BMA instructor.

The prospective students were also taken on a tour of a logistics vessel during a ship visit at the Sungai Duhon Quayside Port located by the Belait River near the Kuala Belait Industrial Area.

The students also visited PTAS Amanah 10 where they were first briefed on the safety precautions required to be taken to ensure the safety of personnel boarding the vessel, before being given a tour of various parts of the ship, including the bridge, engine room and crew quarters.
