A TOTAL of 36 participants from the King’s College London, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, University of Tsukuba, Mahidol University and Mahasarakham University have undergone a four-week Global Discovery Programme (GDP): Discover Brunei Course organised by the Office of Assistant Vice Chancellor (Global Affairs).

The Global Discovery Programme: Discover Brunei Course is Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) flagship Summer School programme that offers the opportunities to learn the first-hand experience of life in the Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures through lectures, educational visits, homestays, as well as excursion trips to many interesting places in Brunei Darussalam for these students from UBD’s partner universities.

The students spent 26 days at UBD, and the programme came to a close with the closing ceremony on August 6 attended by Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Global Affairs) of UBD.

Syeda Tahir, from King’s College London shared on her experience, “GDP is a once in a lifetime experience. It is an opportunity to explore nature in its pristine form.

“It is a whole month filled with joy and excitement and some epic experiences such as hiking all the way to the canopy top in Temburong and presenting traditional Malay dance and songs at Ministry of Culture,Youth and Sports.

“In short saya suka Brunei (I love Brunei) and terima kasih (thank you).”

Ng Soo Yee, from the National University of Singapore shared that “The best part of this programme is that I have met participants as well as buddies from six countries and now we all become close friends who laugh and sing together!’’

Khoo Yi Feng from the same university expressed his thoughts at the closing ceremony as the Student Representative. Yi Feng said, “Thank you for everything especially the Entrepreneurship Village session where I have learnt that it is possible to put together an idea in a period as short as one hour.

“That’s a feat. Thank you for inspiring us to think differently and that we can be entrepreneurs.”

GDP programme was launched in 2009 where the first group of students was from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “For the past seven years, the GDP has been increasingly popular especially students enjoy the learning together with the UBD “Student Ambassadors”, said Harris Ar-Rafi bin Mohd Zaini, GDP Programme Coordinator.

The GDP programme at UBD will welcome a group of Vietnamese students from FPT University in September.

This is covered under GDP (IEPC) Intensive English Proficiency Course.
