A DELEGATION from the Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DPPMB) visited the MPK Lumapas Community Farm yesterday to show support for local farmers in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of DPPMB.

The delegation led by Dr Haji Kamaruddin bin Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, President of DPPMB, was welcomed by Dato Paduka Haji Jemat bin Haji Ampal, Adviser to MPK Lumapas.

The visit began with a briefing on the background and progress of the community farm’s chilli plantation.

Dato Paduka Haji Jemat said the farm has seen its fair share of struggles and obstacles such as the environment and diseases, but has managed to produce quality chillies after trial and error. He then led the delegation to view the chilli fields as well as the farm’s irrigation system.

Dr Haji Kamaruddin, the President of DPPMB, said, “The visit was held to have a closer look at the farming activities of the farmers and to hear about their success and challenges. The farm is an inspiration to the younger generation and village residents in utilising farming land granted by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.”

A DPPMB member, Pengiran Haji Haris bin Pengiran Haji Duraman, owner of Riza Fudhlana Farming, said the poultry farm in Bebatik Kulapis will be supplying chicken manure free of charge to the MPK Lumapas Community Farm to be used as fertiliser.

“This initiative will support the MPK Lumapas Community Farm by cutting costs of purchasing fertiliser,” he said.

The MPK Lumapas Community Farm was officiated by the former Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, on November 27, 2013 with the aim of generating income through agriculture for village farmers.

The DPPMB was established in 1964 with the objective of uniting Malay entrepreneurs in the country on one platform where they can work and move forward together.
