THE Diplomatic Corps team is in high spirits leading up to this year’s Brunei Darussalam Regatta set to take place on August 14 on the Brunei River.
Marina B Laker, High Commissioner of Canada to Brunei Darussalam and captain of the Diplomatic Corps team in an interview with the Bulletin yesterday said, “Our goal this year is to beat the permanent secretary’s boat. We will try our best. It’s really about having fun and getting together with the community.”
“Canadians are known for paddling activities like rowing, canoeing and kayaking. I brought my own kayak from Canada so I am on the water quite a lot,” she explained after pointing out that this is her second time taking part in the event.
Although she has never taken part in a dragon boat race before, she said that the technique is almost similar.
Touching on the Brunei Darussalam Regatta, she said, “It’s a great event for people to get out and about and it’s also about His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah on physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.”
The event is organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The ongoing preparations are carried out by the event’s executive committee in conjunction with His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebration.
Around five teams took part in the training session yesterday in the Brunei River.
