THE  NFABD Under-16 Youth League Supported by FIFA will be entering a second season following an announcement by the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) that the league will commence on March 10, 2017 at the Berakas Sports Complex.

The committee is targeting a total of 14 teams in the league with 11 teams expected to join and registration is open for teams pending a screening process to fill in the remaining slots.

Dayem Haji Ali, Competitions Director of NFABD said that the format of the tournament will be two round robin stages- which will end on November- with the second one slated to be held after the Eid festivities until the concluding month.

The players who are eligible to play in the tournament are those born in 2001, 2002 and 2003, who are allowed to register for the participating teams.

The venues involved are Menglait Field ‘A’ and ‘B’, Sungai Kebun Sports Complex and the NFABD Artificial Field.

In addition to the NFABD Under-16 Youth League, the teams will also be competing for additional silverware called the NFABD Youth Cup which is knock-out football.

The NFABD Youth Cup is also expected to run in the month of August this year which is expected to feature a total of 16 teams. The 14 teams which are expected to join in the league will be entered into the cup competition.

The objectives of organising the NFABD Under-16 Youth League among others include providing knowledge to the coaches who will be coaching the under-16 teams and their opportunities to familiarise with the coaching which will enable them to create programmes.

The NFABD Youth Cup is also expected to run in the month of August this year

The NFABD Youth Cup is also expected to run in the month of August this year

Besides that, the league serves to provide playing time for the players in order to adapt challenges faced against overseas teams whereby NFABD are well informed that international teams play more matches compared to the games in Brunei.

Dayem added that the two rounds of robin enabled the players to play a minimum of 30 games in one year which is the main objective for the players.

He also touched on fair play whereby there are a lot of categories to be assessed in which among others include respecting the tournament and officials and this is present among coaches and officials to show their players during matches.

The tournament also acts as a development programme as a platform from those aged 16, 18 and consequently until they reach an age where they can take part in the SEA Games and other international tournaments which other countries also aspire to.

Meanwhile, League Manager Mohammad Shahnon bin Haji Mohd Salleh said that teams who are unable to take part in the NFABD Under-16 Youth League because of not meeting the initial criteria can still register for the NFABD Youth Cup.

“In the rules and regulations which have been set by the Organising Committee, players who are born after 2003, 2004 and 2005 are allowed to join the competition. However, they need to be filtered and accepted through NFABD as certain things are taken into account such as physical attributes if they are appropriate to compete against players who are more matured,” said Mohammad Shahnon during a media conference at the NFABD House last night.

“There are other criteria which has been set through the development programme set by FIFA. They have set that for a development of each player they must play with the same age environment which is comparable to one another which is 2001, 2002 and 2003 only.”

Mohamad Shahnon also shared that the total number of games which will be played totalled 192 league and cup matches.

“From the development programme, FIFA do not encourage overage players to go down in the leagues below their age group. But they can play in the league above,” added Mohamad Shahnon.

The league manager added that the transfer window will be open after the completion of the first round robin league matches and before the start of the NFABD Youth Cup.

New players who have been registered are eligible to take part for their new teams in the NFABD Youth Cup and also the second round robin matches in the league provided both the teams involving the new and old team agree for the move to take place.

Forms will also be provided which needed to be filled in by the new team to accept and approval required from the old team.

According to Mohd Shahnon, the duration for each match is 30 minutes for each half.

“THE Brunei film industry has potential to grow,” said Harlif bin Haji Mohamad, the founder of Regal Blue Production – a local film production house.

Speaking at a booth set up to promote local films during the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ event in the capital on Sunday, Harlif said that despite the lack of a film school in Brunei, there are now modules and courses on videography and film work. There has also been an emergence of young filmmakers making their debut both locally and internationally.

Harlif highlighted the need for filmmakers to collaborate and help each other improve for the sake of promoting the film industry.

The Brunei local film booth aimed to promote local films and highlight the colourful history of Brunei-produced films, including ‘Gema dari Menara,’ the first film produced in 1968. A religion-inspired film made in collaboration with the Religious Department, the film depicts a soulful 70’s story that still has strong impact in modern society.

Meanwhile, fellow filmmaker and Cinemotion Films owner Hanidi bin Haji Mahmud highlighted the resurgence of local film production in 2013, with the production of ‘Ada apa dengan Rina.’ Working in collaboration with Lao Art Media Co Ltd, a sequel to the comedy is currently in the works.

Harlif and Hanidi expressed hopes that young filmmakers will broaden their experiences and take a chance in entering the local film industry, for which Brunei has a niche in terms of local myths and lores, comedy, scenic nature views and rich culture, all of which are just waiting to be tapped into.

Earlier in the day, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam visited the Brunei local film booth and was presented with a pesambah in the form of a framed collection of local films.

Tackling challenges posed by natural disasters

|      Achong Tanjong      |

NATURAL disasters are a major challenge faced by many people around the world. Brunei Darussalam, although geographically spared from disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and typhoons, is also affected by natural disasters in the region.

This was highlighted by Abdul Rahim bin Haji Ismail, Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Centre, in his capacity as chief guest at the opening ceremony of the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) programme for Mukim Kianggeh and Mukim Kota Batu, held at Multi-Purpose Hall of Bandaran Depot in Kampong Belimbing in Subok yesterday.

“We felt tremors recently from the earthquake that occurred in the Sulawesi Ocean at the beginning of January this year. We were also affected by the tail-end of typhoons that hit our neighbouring countries,” he said.

He added that the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has been entrusted by the government to shoulder the responsibility to manage disasters in the country.

“The agency’s emergency response operations are aimed to ensure the welfare of society, but we also need to give due attention to activities of disaster risk reduction. It also takes into account that our society is constantly exposed to various forms of disasters and should be given training in disaster risk reduction,” he said. “With the collaboration of the Brunei-Muara District Office and National Disaster Management Centre, we once again or-ganised the CBDRM programme to highlight activities of reducing disaster risk compared to typical reaction after disaster.”

He added that CBDRM is one of the continuous programmes and it is one of the priority activities under NDMC to-wards disaster risk management through prevention and disaster preparedness programmes.

He hoped that through the two-day programme, the communities in Mukim Kianggeh and Mukim Kota Batu will gain benefits from various talks delivered by different agencies related to disaster management. Participants of the programme also take part in practical sessions concerned with the technique to douse fires and basic skills in life saving as well as producing a hazard map that will contain information on the areas affected by the disasters.

He said the cooperation and commitment from all penghulus and villages heads and the involvement of members of mukim and village consultative councils as well as youths and volunteers will resume implement the programme in the future.

Cooperation of the public is vital in tackling any occurrences of disasters at the mukim and village levels with efficacy. The initiative is one of the positive indicators towards enhancing unity among residents of villages.

Some 100 participants are taking part in the programme comprising members of Mukim and village consultative councils, Committee members of Neighbourhood Watch and residents of Mukim Kianggeh and Mukim Kota Batu.

The programme is organised in collaboration with the Brunei-Muara District Office with the involvement of Fire and Rescue Department, Public Works Department, Survey Department, Community Development Department (JAPEM), Islamic Dakwah Centre and Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society.

Since its launch in 2010, the programme has been conducted in 15 mukims throughout the nation with the focus on mukims that are always affected by natural disasters.

MINISTER of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof yesterday pointed out that the newly launched book festival is not merely for the educated and the youths, but also for the young ones.

In fact, the Language and Literature Bureau has set activities to get children acquainted with books and to inculcate the habit of reading.

Speaking on the sidelines of the book fair launch at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, the minister said the event was a commendable effort, and that parents and guardians should take advantage of the fair, where they can learn and choose books.

With regard to the Sultanate of Oman’s participation at the event, the minister said, “it helps to strengthen the good relations between two brotherly nations.”

Meanwhile, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Brunei Darussalam Sheikh Ahmed bin Hashel bin Rashed bin Hashel Al-Maskari said the embassy is delighted to participate at the fair for the fourth time, and is keen to share the Omani culture and publications with local communities.

“We have over the past years found that Bruneians are keen to learn more about the Islamic and Arabic culture. Besides showcasing Omani books and culture, we are also showing the Omani heritage.

“We have been donating books to Brunei universities such as Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and plan to donate more books to Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) this year,” the ambassador said.

“It is also an honour to have UNISSA students who have studied the Arabic Language in Oman to man our booth. It is a joint effort between the embassy and UNISSA.

“I am also really honoured that as an embassy, we are able to make people-to-people connections. We are the only two Sultanates in the world and we always join hands. Brunei is also taking part in a book fair in Oman at present, highlighting the cultural exchange between the two countries,” he added.

A young avid reader, Danial Aiman, expressed excitement about the fair saying, “I visited a similar fair last year. I am trying to find the latest Harry Potter story books this year.”

A total of 97 booths have been set up, with 45 entries from nine government publishers, 19 book stores, two computer shops and 11 overseas participants including the UAE, Jordan, Sultanate of Oman, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

There was also a prize presentation for the fast-selling book written by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz (Dr) Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, and the unveiling of 18 new books.

HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, once again highlighted the need to observe the titah of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam which called for the Golden Jubilee celebrations of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne to be observed as a historical event but with due moderation.

“It is important that each of the planned event is being implemented in a proper manner that does not fall outside the time limits and expenditure,” said His Royal Highness in a sabda yesterday, during the second meeting of the Executive Committee for the Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Prime Minister’s Office in the capital.

His Royal Highness also said that successive discussions would focus more on implementation planning by each sectoral committee for the Golden Jubilee celebrations.

“This includes any difficulties or problems faced by each sectoral committee, which need to be addressed at the executive committee level,” said His Royal Highness.

His Royal Highness also pointed out the immediate need for an effective communications strategy, in order to draw more involvement from all sections of society, particularly youths.

“The use of technology and electronic media such as application downloads should be the main choice in the propagation strategy,” said His Royal Highness.

“I am pleased to note that every sectoral committee is actively involved in the discussion of specific plans and preparations to ensure the main events are implemented in a well-organised, systematic and precise manner.

“Such commitment, perseverance and cooperation demonstrate the strong ties among the citizens and the people, which have been established through their obedience and loyalty to the sovereign and the country.”

“The Golden Jubilee celebration is obviously much anticipated by all levels of society in the country,” said His Royal Highness, adding that “this will be the opportunity for all the citizens and people of Brunei Darussalam to honour His Majesty’s wise reign as a monarch committed towards the solidarity and prosperity of his subjects and the country.

“It is therefore fitting that the event should assume a deep historical significance, as a tribute to His Majesty’s leadership and many contributions during his 50-year reign.”

His Royal Highness further noted that steady and committed involvement by all levels of society, particularly youths, is crucial to ensuring the success of any major event.

“This is in line with the aims of promoting the spirit of volunteerism, willingness to contribute to matters of national interest, love for the country and readiness to uphold the principles of monarchy,” said His Royal Highness.

“This is very important in this modern era of globalisation that has completely changed the way we live. If not handled properly, a high-tech and information-oriented lifestyle can have adverse effects on the thoughts, ideas and traditions of society, especially youths.”

On this note, His Royal Highness urged the executive committee members to work together in a concerted effort to curb the negative effects of globalisation.

“The executive committee should also view these celebrations as an opportunity to further strengthen the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept as a continuing tradition in a society that is invested with pure Islamic values and united in solidarity as Bruneians,” said His Royal Highness.

About 50 delegates between the ages of 20 and 35 with various backgrounds from the 10 Asean member countries participated in the four-day workshop.

Throughout the workshop, the delegates learnt from experts the fundamental principles of green-business development and its relationship to both community issues and national economic development. Topics included the tourism environment, infra-structure, entrepreneurship, economic empowerment and programme management.

The workshop also provided the opportunity for participants to develop their own real-world business pitches and included a visit to the Sumbiling Eco Village in Temburong District.

“The YSEALI Generation GR3EN Workshop aims to develop a dynamic generation of Southeast Asian ‘eco-preneur’ youths who will propagate effective and progressive socio-economic development through regional and community green networks,” Muller said in her closing remarks at the ceremony yesterday.

The US Embassy is proud to have been a part of this workshop, and we sincerely hope that this further enhances the skills, knowledge, and networking potential of each of the delegates in the field of green-business.”

Azrizzan Hilmi Rohhizzal, a member of the ACES team, in an interview with the Bulletin said that the programme aimed to develop a more cohesive online platform for eco-tourism business that acts as a bridge between Asean eco-tourism companies, establishments and the Tourism Accreditation and Certification Society.

He also shared the delight of teaming up with fellow young professionals and sharing ideas and knowledge in presenting their visions during the workshop.

The YSEALI Generation GR3EN Workshop was sponsored by the US Department of State and funded through a cooperative agreement from the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam to AGREA for the administration of the workshop.

THE old wooden flooring of the Brunei Basketball Association’s (BBA) Basketball Court in Batu Bersurat has seen its final share of basketball action on Tuesday night following a friendly basketball match between media personnel.

The BBA committee members as well as national team players were also present to take a group photo for the last time on the wooden court.

Built more than 10 years ago, the BBA basketball court has hosted many competitions and games such as the Borneo City Basketball Invitational Tournament (Borneo Cup), local tournaments, training sessions for the national team as well as the Brunei Barracudas team for Asean Basketball League and friendly basketball games.

Local basketball players have raised to the occasion to score some winning shots in the 10-year-old court; some have won and some have felt the bitterness of defeats on the court. However, the most important thing was the friendships that were forged while playing the game of basketball.
