THE Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital saw a surge in patients seeking minor treatment at its Outpatient Department on Monday night.

A medical officer at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department said the reason for the sudden increase may be due to many of the patients being unaware that the same medical services are also provided at the newly-opened Berakas Health Centre at RPN Lambak Kanan.

She said that some members of the public might also not be aware that the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Health Centre located in Ong Sum Ping is no longer operating after-office hours as its after-office hours services are now provided at the Berakas Health Centre.

The medical officer said on Monday night, the department received 442 patients, of whom 343 were categorised under the green-coded triage that refers to mostly minor treatment.

In comparison on Monday last week the department received 371 patients, of whom 263 patients were categorised under green-coded triage.

“On Monday, we received an unusually high volume of patients. As result, the waiting time for patients to see doctors was longer than usual,” the medical officer said.

“Therefore, we would like to inform the public that as the BSB Health Centre no longer operates beyond office hours, the public can go to Berakas Health Centre as the Berakas Health Centre provides the same medical services.”

She said the under the triage system, red code refers to patients that need immediate medical treatment usually involving major treatment; yellow code refers to the stabilised patients who need more medical attention and are sent to trolley area for follow-up; and green code refers to the patients requiring minor medical treatment such as for a runny nose, cough and food poisoning.

The medical officer said that the Berakas Health Centre is open from 7am until 9pm from Monday to Thursday and Saturday. On Friday and Sunday, including public holidays, the centre is open from 2pm until 9pm.

She said that most of the patients who came in for treatment at RIPAS Hospital last Monday had symptoms of runny nose, cough, skin rash and food poisoning. Therefore, the best to manage this kind of sickness are the general practitioners (doctors) at the Outpatient Department at respective health centres, she added.

Even though RIPAS Hospital received almost a big increase in patients last Monday, it did not affect the red and yellow-coded areas, she said.

The Berakas Health Centre that was opened on Monday provides core services including primary care services such as an outpatient clinic, chronic disease clinic and a flu clinic, other facilities at the centre include mother and children health services, dental services, pharmaceutical services and special services such as rehabilitation services, psychiatric services, healthy lifestyle clinic and paramedical services.

IN OUR resolve to implement the strategic plans for the Brunei Vision 2035, we should remain strong under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, support the Islamic value system and uphold the tradition of befriending all citizens and residents.

This was pointed out by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, while presenting a special lecture during a get-together with Brunei students in Egypt.

The three goals are pillars of the Brunei Vision 2035, and we should strive with a clear intent to ensure the highest progress for Brunei Darussalam and its people, keeping the nation peaceful, harmonious, united and prosperous and upholding its identity as a Malay Islamic Monarchy, the minister added.

The ceremony took place at a hotel in Cairo on Monday during a visit by the minister to Cairo after attending the 26th Conference of the Supreme Council organised by the Awqaf Ministry of Egypt in Aswan, the southern region of the country.

In his special lecture titled ‘Ilahi Save Brunei Darussalam’, the minister described the significant words of prayer in the lyrics of the national anthem ‘Allah Peliharakan Sultan’ as a reflection of our effort to maintain the nation’s existence as a sovereign, prosperous and peaceful place under the leadership of a monarch who is just.

On this note, the minister described the important episodes of the history of Brunei Darussalam since the establishment of the first Islamic reign in the 13th Century up to assuming the responsibility of the nation as a sovereign state in 1984.

According to the minister, these events have brought valuable lessons to the new, progressive and successful generation of Brunei for the modernisation of the nation. We should be grateful for Brunei and its socio-political system as it is a blessing of Allah the Almighty that must be maintained and developed in a responsible manner.

Attending the reception were Haji Abdul Kahar bin Haji Hussin, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Egypt and his wife; Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs; and officials of the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Cairo, Egypt.

THE Energy Kitchen has pledged support to the recipient of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Solidarity Programme training scholarship Mohd Fakhri bin Ismail by providing a three-month sponsorship meal plan to enhance the athlete’s preparations for the Olympic Games in Rio.

With the Olympics three months away, the meal plan has yielded a positive effect on the national sprinter and has vastly benefited him during his recovery period.

“I look after my diet and nutrition so in a week I felt great and recovery has been sufficient. Training conditions are also great as I’ve had been enriched with sufficient proteins, carbs and fibre”, said Fakhri in an interview with the media following the announcement of the collaboration.

The Energy Kitchen prepared the meal but would replace it with an alternative should there be any dishes which are not suitable for Fakhri though the measurement of calories will remain the same.

As a sprinter, Fakhri requires 2,500 calories per day and has been customised with a medium carbs plan as opposed to a low carbs plan.

The collaboration started two weeks ago and the owner of Energy Kitchen, Wu Chun, emphasised that proper diet and nutrition are crucial for high intensity sports training and that the Energy Kitchen is happy to share their knowledge to fuel Fakhri and help him perform his optimum.

In creating the three-month plan, the Energy Kitchen is working closely with Alim Roslan, a US-certified trainer under the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) with experience in sports nutrition.

“Proper nutrition is important not just for performance but also with the recovery, this is where the gains are made; during recovery. So it is essential that the proper food is taken in to help maximise recovery and help build muscle”, Alim said.

“In the case of Fakhri, he’s a sprinter which requires a very high power to weight ratio”, he added.

Alim warned that without proper nutrition Fakhri’s performances may not be optimal adding that it is essential to get the right food and nutrients to provide him with energy for his morning session, replenish glycogen stores and also provide him with energy for his high intensity training.

“Carbohydrates, protein and fats must also be sufficient and at the right amount for his recovery post training”.

Fakhri, the national record holder for 100m, acknowledged the support of the Energy Kitchen saying that their meal preparation and his nutrition being taken care of with suitable, healthy and tasty meals has given him a massive lift to his training.

The national sprinter, who is also a local brand ambassador of international sports apparel Under Armour, has also received a complimentary lifetime membership from Fitness Zone in preparation of the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The lifetime membership will not only assist the athlete to help him prepare for the Olympics but also goes hand in hand to further promote a healthy and fit lifestyle among Bruneians.

Wu Chun, who is also the Managing Director of Fitness Zone has a vision in supporting fresh local talents especially fitness enthusiasts who he shares the same passion.

“Our local athletes have a great influence on the public. Use that influence to lead people in living a better and meaningful life together with a healthy lifestyle”, the managing director said.

Mohd Fakhri became the latest popular figure associated with Fitness Zone which previously sponsored the first female motocross racer, swimming athletes as well as basketball players to name a few.

Kean heaps praise on Aw’s philosophy

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean has expressed admiration in the philosophy that Home United coach Philippe Aw is trying to instil in the club ahead of their crucial S League tie at the Bishan Stadium in Singapore tonight.

Last March, Kean revealed that The Protectors drew parallels with the way his own charges perform on the pitch as a team who prioritise the urgency for possession football.

The similarities that both clubs share also extend to the undoubted talents of the import players and the prodigious rise of young local players from the academy as well as the continuity of the same team.

“I like his (Philippe) philosophy and he likes to bring young players”, Kean said in an interview after a training session at the Jerudong Mini Stadium on Tuesday.

“When he first took over, they were quite an old team. They’ve had a lot of senior professionals and he made way and let them go and made a pathway through for the young players”.

“I think that’s admirable for a club to do that. They are really hard to play against because they’ve got energy, speed and get the ball back quick”, he said.

Kean would need no reminding of the threat that Danish striker Ken Ilso and the lung-busting runs of Sirina Camara offered but believed the threat should be covered with a wider range of players with the growth of their local players from the Prime team.

The development of the young players at Home United has been likened to how the ‘Gegar Gegar’ men have progressed over the last few seasons.

“I’m equally impressed with the local players as the imports. They are very similar to us and if a neutral was watching the development over the last couple of seasons for both clubs they are probably the most similar to us”, Kean added.

“They are a good team. They have been together a long time like us and they’ve got a lot of young players that came through from the Prime team”, he said.

But his charges will be up for the fight after staging a promising display at home against Hougang last week.

“We’ve shown that we’ve got a little bit more resilience now even in the last half an hour when we were chasing the game”.

“We’ve dug something out which we have not seen this year. There was a little bit more desire just to do whatever it takes to get the points”, Kean continued.

Home United FC managed nine wins, nine draws and nine losses last year but they are well on course to better that haul this season.

Kean has exercised caution that his charges may not be able to hold possession of the ball for a period of time if they intend to produce killer passes which go astray.

“If you don’t look after the ball enough you don’t see it for a long time against Home United. They are really good in keeping it”.

“We need to be patient and when we get the ball back we’re not always trying to make a killer pass because if we do we might not see the ball again for 10 minutes”.

The summit which is held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre has attracted the participation of political leaders, policymakers, representatives from international organisations, business leaders and experts in related trades from all over the world.

The participants will discuss the new opportunities presented by the Belt and Road Initiative in various areas, including finance, logistics and maritime transport, professional services, cross-border investment, infrastructure development and international trade, as well as the unique role that Hong Kong could play.

Addressing the opening session of the summit, the Chief Executive, C Y Leung, said the Belt and Road Initiative offers unprecedented opportunities to all territories, including Hong Kong.

With the combined advantages of ‘one country’ and ‘two systems’, Hong Kong can serve as a “super-connector” between mainland China and the rest of the world.

In areas such as finance, investment, professional services, trade, logistics, culture, creativity, innovation and technology, Hong Kong’s unique ‘super-connector’ role can bring together the strengths of Belt and Road economies.

The National 13th Five-Year Plan of China clearly supports Hong Kong and Macau leveraging their unique advantages to enhance the roles and functions in the country’s economic development and opening up to other countries, including the Belt and Road Initiative.

He added that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government is setting up a dedicated Belt and Road office to push forward related work plans.

The HKSAR Government will work closely with the Central Authorities of China and Belt and Road partners to ensure effective co-ordination of policies and measures, to identify areas of collaboration and to facilitate timely exchange of information for the common good.

The summit was organised by the HKSAR Government, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, as well as the People’s Bank of China, as supporting bodies.

The one-day programme of the summit features a keynote speech, a keynote luncheon, a series of panel sessions and concurrent investment and business matching workshops on topics relating to logistics and transport infrastructure, urban planning and rural development, public utilities and energy, telecommunications, and international trade and manufacturing.

HAJI Mohd Jaafar Maun Primary School in Kiulap and Sultan Hassan Secondary School in Bangar emerged as champions in the finals of the 40th Brunei Traditional Dance Competition for primary schools and the 8th Brunei Ethnic Dance Competition for schools, colleges and Sixth Form Centres respectively on Tuesday.

Haji Mohd Jaafar Maun Primary School performed the ‘Alus Jua Dindang’ dance, while Sultan Hassan Secondary School performed the ‘Umak Ruma’ dance.

The runners-up in the respective categories were Lambak Kanan Jalan 49 Primary School and Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School.

Organised by the Co-Curriculum Education Department at the Ministry of Education, the finals took place at the Riadah Hall of the Youth Centre in the capital, where the guest of honour was Pengiran Sarimah binti Pengiran Haji Ahmad, Acting Head of the Special Education Unit (SEU), Ministry of Education.

Roslin bin Suhailee, Acting Assistant Director of Co-Curriculum Education and the chairman of the competition, said that the rapid development of technology has resulted in a decline in public interest in traditional and ethnic dances compared with other fields of arts such as contemporary dance.

In a bid to reverse this trend, he said the competition aimed to develop local traditional and ethnic dance as an artistic heritage that could be preserved and appreciated as part of the Brunei identity, in accordance with the national Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy.

In an interview, one of the teachers of Haji Mohd Jaafar Maun Primary School in Kiulap said that preparations for the competition were held during the Co-Curriculum Activity (CCA) sessions and on Friday and Sunday to avoid disturbing the students’ lessons.

“The majority of our participants are in Year 2 up to Year 5. The instructors are the schools’ teachers themselves as they have experience in the dances and they also learned from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Co-Curriculum Education Department,” she said.

She said the competition helped the students learn more about traditional dances. She also expressed hopes that the participants would pass on their knowledge to the future generations to preserve the dances.

In an interview, Abdul Hamid bin Aji, a teacher from Sultan Hassan Secondary School said, “Our dancers are from the Andaman Club, which is under my supervision.”

The school also invited a dancer from the Murut ethnic community to show the student the ‘real’ concept of the ‘Umak Ruma’ dance, he said.

The objective of the competition is to promote student interest in local culture and heritage, particularly traditional and ethnic dances.

A NEW way of getting around the capital could potentially be taking shape, as a group of students is working on establishing the first bicycle-sharing system in Brunei.

Dubbed ‘Biskal Kitani’, this bike-sharing system is looking to make it easier for people to get around Bandar Seri Begawan at an affordable price.

Biskal Kitani is a creation of Politeknik Brunei students Dayangku Siti ‘Atiyah Syakirah binti Pengiran Muhd Hassan, Raliza binti Rais, Amal Hamizah binti Hasnan, Dayangku Nur Radhiah binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Dayangku Nor Hadiatul Hadirah binti Pengiran Idris and Dayangku Hajah Seri Rosdina Norazlina As-Sabrina binti Pengiran Dr Haji Rosman.

It was featured at a recent entrepreneurship exhibition organised by Politeknik Brunei, where students get to put their entrepreneurial ideas on display.

Speaking to the Bulletin during the exhibition, they shared, “It is potentially the first bike-sharing system in Brunei.”

“We are planning to put this Biskal Kitani service in Bandar Seri Begawan, initially at four stations. Under the service, you can rent a bicycle for four hours and unlimited distance for just $2, and simply have to return it to any of the four designated stations after you have finished using it.”

Explaining why they decided to do this, they said, “Firstly is because Brunei is one of the top countries that emit carbon dioxide per capita, so we would like to reduce that. We would also like to reduce traffic jams, as the usage of cars is very high. And moreover, the oil prices, so we’d like to reduce the usage and consumption of oil by having people utilise our service.”

They also highlighted the health benefits using their bicycle-sharing system would offer, as “because people will be exercising”. In addition, they are looking to make the service open 24 hours.

“We also feel that this is an advantage for travellers and backpackers,” they said, highlighting that instead of having to use other forms of public transport, this will offer them a cheap way of getting around.

As for the bicycles themselves, the students said that for the introduction stage they will be using simple, regular bicycles that have GPS trackers on them. They will also be providing helmets and raincoats for users.

Explaining why they are looking to start off in the capital, they said, “This is based on our survey. We actually conducted a survey in Bandar and online. Eighty per cent of respondents said that we should have this service, especially in Bandar Seri Begawan.”

Their research showed that the top three places people wanted the service to be available were Bandar Seri Begawan, housing areas and central business districts (Gadong, Kiulap, etc).

While their initial plan is to have four stations in the capital, they said that they do intend to expand, “as we reach our maturity stage”.

The students affirmed that they are looking into making Biskal Kitani a reality, and are hoping to garner some investment to put towards their starting capital. Their plan is to set up automated machines at the four stations, though are also considering having the stations manned by people.

Adding on, they said, “We encourage people to cycle more instead of just driving around in their cars with air-conditioners; cycle while enjoying the surroundings of Brunei Darussalam.”

A WORKING visit was organised yesterday by the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood to two agricultural sites in the Belait District.

Both locations are owned by private companies which are growing or breeding one-of-a-kind agricultural products.

The visit was led by Dato Paduka Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism.

The first location was at a 0.1-hectare melon farm at Kampong Pandan ‘B’ in Kuala Belait where the minister was greeted by Haji Abdul Shawal bin Yaman, the founder of Maaz Hanan Zulaikha Enterprise.

Haji Abdul Shawal started the farm which is the only one in the Sultanate to grow golden melons seven years ago as a hobby after his retirement from the Department of Electrical Services (DES). He continued with the venture full time since 2015.

“When I saw the potential, I started doing it as a business and thankfully, it has been doing well in the market,” said Haji Abdul Shawal. He said he sells about five tonnes of melons monthly in various places in Brunei.

“However, the demand from consumers is higher than five tonnes so we still need to expand,” he said. Thanks to the support of the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, his company was given two hectares of ‘KKP’ land at Sungai Petai in Bukit Puan. The farm also plants other types of melons such as honeydew and rockmelon of which the farm produced 11.2 metric tonnes in 2015.

They are sold at all Supa Save branches, Hua Ho Manggis, Giant Hypermarket, all Soon Lee branches, SKH supermarkets, Jaya Hypermart in Gadong, wholesale market in Sengkurong, Tamu Seria and Kuala Belait as well as supplied to 14 Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) vessels.

The minister and his delegation then moved on to the second location, a farm which breeds premium crossed bred Dorper sheep – the first in Brunei as well as the island of Borneo.

Brugoat Farming and Trading Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Soon Lee Farm and Trading Company, operates a 2.1 hectare-site which houses about 642 premium Boer Goats and 833 Dorper Sheep.

The company was founded in 2015 to meet the local demands for goat and sheep meat, said by Phil C L Ong the Operations Manager of Soon Lee Farm and Trading Company.

“We hope to reduce the need for importing quality meat which is costlier as they’re usually flown in the country especially during Korban season,” he said.

Phil said that their facility can only accommodate a maximum of around 3,000 mature goats and sheep – a target they’re aiming to achieve by the end of 2016.

“Currently we have three main sheds which houses a maximum of 500 goats and sheep each and we are planning to build more sheds this year,” he added.

“However as the goat and sheep’s primary diet is grass, we need more land to plant the grass to feed them,” he said.

When asked why the company chose the Dorper Sheep and Boer Goat to breed, he answered that the animals are suitable for controlled breeding as opposed to the open-range method in Australia.

Hajah Hajidah, in her speech, highlighted that the competition is an effort to uphold SPN21 by exposing students to the field of entrepreneurship.

She added that such competition helps in providing opportunities for the participating students to interact and socialise in a harmonious atmosphere in order to build character and positive traits and friendships.

“Department of Co-Curriculum Education wishes to identify and nurture students having the potential to start their own businesses, to act on productive ideas borne through discussions and workshops,” she continued.

“By working in groups, students are exposed to working as a cohesive group, uniting ideas to address areas of mutual interest. By reaching consensus and at times arguing, the group will later build its own character as well as cultivate positive interpersonal qualities.”

The ceremony later saw the presentation of the capital worth B$200 to the five selected finalists including Masin Secondary School, Berakas Secondary School, Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School, Sports School and Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School, by the guest of honour.

Low five – Kean suffers biggest loss as DPMM FC boss

DPMM FC suffered their worst defeat in all competitions under Steve Kean following a 5-0 capitulation at the hands of Home United FC in the S League at the Bishan Stadium last night.

More importantly the result left them with serious damage of retaining their title who could be 14 points adrift from league leaders Albirex Niigata (S) who currently hold a two-game advantage.

The nightmare in Bishan were evidently DPMM FC’s worst league defeat since the 6-2 hammering at home by Tampines Rovers FC in August 2013.

The ‘Gegar Gegar’ men also succumbed to their fifth defeat of the season, the same number of losses that they recorded when they won the league last year.

The Japanese satellite team can start lengthen their lead over the reigning holders if they see off Geylang International FC tonight.

The visitors were nearly gifted a surprise early lead after Shahrin Saberin’s error but goalkeeper Zulfairuz Rudy came to his team-mate aid clearing the ball away before it reached DPMM FC striker Shahrazen Said.

After flirting with disaster, Home United enjoyed a lead as Azhar Sairudin struck in the 9th minute with a wonderful solo goal.

The home side raced to a counterattack but Faris Ramli’s shot was pushed away for a corner.

DPMM FC import Rafael Ramazotti seemed certain to score until Home defender Abdil Qaiyyim Mutalib intervened with a brave block.

It was no wonder why DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean was concerned if his charges surrendered possession to a dangerous Home United side which they did as Faris Ramli netted from a devastating counterattacking move.

Home United ran riot as import Ken Ilso made it 3-0 from yet another counter-attack before doubling his tally by sliding past goalkeeper Wardun Yussof.

Syahrin Miswan completed the visitors’ misery steering home the rebound to condemn DPMM FC’s biggest loss in four seasons.

BASMIDA urges families to strengthen Islamic faith

THE National Anti-Drug Association (BASMIDA) of Brunei Darussalam yesterday called on Muslims to jointly create happy families by strengthening their Islamic faith in accordance with the national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).

The President of BASMIDA, Datin Hajah Masni binti Haji Mohammad Ali said this while delivering a speech yesterday at a motivational talk organised by BASMIDA in conjunction with National Family Day 2016, which dealt with the topic, ‘Strengthening the Islamic family institution to prevent drug abuse, Internet abuse, other addictions as well as cybercrimes’.

In her speech, Datin Hajah Masni said, “The link between the growing fragility of the family institution and the effects of drug abuse, misuse of the Internet, pornography addiction and domestic violence can no longer be doubted now in the era of globalisation without borders,” she continued.

“For us, the Muslim community in the countries of Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, the attack of thoughts that contradict Islam has brought a small percentage of Muslim youths towards thought patterns of humanism, pluralism and liberalism,” she continued.

She said that studies conducted among youths in neighbouring countries show that a small number possess views that are contrary to Islam and are feared could, in the future, dilute the identity of youth.

“The feminist agenda and efforts to legalise the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) will destroy the identity of Muslim women, threaten the sanctity of marriage between men and women as well as destroy and undermine the individuality and cultural identity of Muslim women,” she said.

She highlighted that Islam honours and gives respect to women and puts the dignity of women at a high level in accordance with the nature and role of women themselves as servants of Allah the Almighty.

She noted that the thinking of humanism was first introduced in the West scientifically in 1766-1848, and was taught in secondary schools, adding that it recommends that they hold human rights and stands as philosophical thought.

“Now humanism puts humans at the liberty to decide and deny the importance of religion or the existence of God,” she said. “Thoughts like these have strengthened the movement in western countries, as well as Australia and Canada to legalise drugs, which are regulated under national law and international law as determined by the United Nations.”

In conjunction with the National Family Day 2016, Datin Hajah Masni called on Bruneian Muslims to follow the guidance of “MIB and practice the Islamic way of life in a Zikir Nation” to create happy families.

Call to adopt efficient farming methods to avoid land wastage

FARMERS have been urged to adopt efficient methods to increase their yields and prevent wastage of land.

The Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Paduka Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong urged farmers to find the agricultural methods that best suit the local environment.

He made the call on Wednesday during his working visit to the Belait District where he toured a golden melon farm run by Maaz Hanan Zulaikha Enterprise at Kg Pandan ‘B’ in Kuala Belait as well as Brugoat Farming and Trading Sdn Bhd which operates a 2.1 hectare-site farm that breeds Boer Goats and Dorper Sheep.

“We would like to see more ‘vertical’ farming or other types of farming that utilise technologies to produce a high-yield in a small area,” he said.

He said unlike Malaysia and Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam does not have a lot of land and the country also has the responsibility to preserve 70 per cent of its land as forests.

In addition, Brunei’s land is utilised for housing, development, education and agriculture. “We need to be able to be efficient in our land use,” he said.

“Don’t just stick to the traditional ways (of farming) but try to tap into technologies which can produce high yielding crop.”

He said the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood is ready to provide local farmers with help, including technical aspects, to adopt efficient agricultural practices.

He said his ministry is also ready to help farmers expand their operations to meet not only domestic demands but also export markets, including finding for them partners from other countries.

“Just approach us. We are also offering land at Bio-Innovative Corridor in Kg Tungku.”

The minister said farmers must be serious in their venture after they have been provided with training and facilities by the government.

“We can’t afford to give land to people (farmers) who don’t finish what they have started,” he said.

“We give them land but they give it to someone else and charge them for rent. That’s not right.”
