A DIALOGUE session with a delegation of Chinese Academy of Tropical Agriculture Sciences (CATAS) and the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong was held at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism yesterday.

The minister in his brief welcoming remark said Brunei is looking for modern and urban farming technology due to the country’s small size of land and can go for high-end products because the government wants Bruneian farmers to become successful.

“We are also looking for high-yields, and modern and urban farming (procedures, technology) that can grow suitable fruits in small land,” he said, adding that Brunei is also doing some research on methods to increase padi yield and the right padi variety that suits Brunei soil.

The minister expressed confidence that with the aid of the scientists from China, Brunei will be able to develop a suitable variety suited to its soil.

The delegation is in the country to seek more cooperation with Brunei’s agriculture authorities and to explore agricultural opportunities in Brunei.

CATAS has been providing consultation services to farmers and agro-enterprises on agronomic techniques and pest control of rubber, cassava, banana, and tropical fruits trees since 2010 as well as holding international training courses on tropical agriculture for developing countries.

Why are Arabic school students weak in Arabic?

|      Azlan Othman      |

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) expressed his concern over certain sections of students in Arabic schools who are unable to master the Arabic language properly and urged the authorities concerned to find resolutions to the issue.

In a titah delivered at the 6th Convocation Ceremony of KUPU SB at the International Convention Centre, Berakas yesterday, His Majesty said, “In Brunei, we have Arabic schools and I want these schools to stay really true to its name where there are various teachings incorporated in it, especially religious knowledge and the Arabic language. The students can be accepted to further their studies both at local institutions and abroad. Without a doubt, the school can make the nation proud.

“But the question is that there is hearsay that the students are unable to master the Arabic language despite its name. In other words, they can’t speak properly in the Arabic language (when) compared to English. If this is true, I hope this matter will be improved and make it the main task to find a solution as to why the acquisition of Arabic language is weak in Arabic schools,” His Majesty added.

“Does it have anything to do with teacher factors such as the shortage of teachers?” His Majesty asked before adding, “Or whether the teachers are less-qualified, or relating to teaching equipment like shortages of books or whether the books are no longer appropriate to be used or possibly, teaching methods that do not meet the criteria or any other matters?”

The issue should be analysed thoroughly and that the weakness and strength of a language should not be judged through examination papers marking as answers can be memorised. It should be taken note of, said the ruler.

The monarch also said that Brunei has stepped forward by establishing a compulsory Religious Education System and that this is a big responsibility.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Chancellor of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), presenting the certificate to one of the graduates during the 6th Convocation Ceremony of KUPU SB, at the International Convention Centre, Berakas. - PHOTOS: AZROL AZMI

His Majesty delivering his titah during the convocation.

His Majesty delivering his titah during the convocation.

“Alhamdulillah, we have accomplished it. We need to make religious education truly shine, advanced and robust,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty also touched on the importance of teachers to inculcate decent values in the students.

His Majesty likened KUPU SB as a factory to produce high-valued products which is to produce individuals with high-moral values. This is the basic matter where its position should not be below but at the top, in-line with the declaration by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and narrated by Bukhari and Muslim that “I was sent to perfect good character”.

“The importance of values is felt especially with the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) where the community, including children, are exposed to elements that impair moral values. The elements are of all sorts and to control them requires careful and proper strategies through teachers who render their meritorious service to nurture decent norms in children and to guide and motivate them to become good and useful.

Parents are also required to provide better and Islamic environment for the children.

“We should not forget the Hadith that says a child is born like a pure white cloth and it is the parents who are responsible to mould them correctly,” the ruler said.

His Majesty also consented to KUPU SB’s idea of setting up a study centre called ‘Fiqh Al-Usrah’ to strengthen the family and educational institution. The ruler also highlighted that teachers should also understand that they are agents for the survival of the people and the nation. And as an agent, religious teachers should not just teach inside the classroom but also set an example or be a role model for the students and the community.

The ruler also congratulated the graduates for their success in completing their studies. “They should be thankful with this success as it comes from Allah the Almighty. Graduates from KUPU SB are accredited teachers and possess vast knowledge,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty also expressed his thanks to KUPU SB’s workforce especially to the chairman, university college members, Ra’es, senate members, core officers, academicians and staff for their contributions. “May their good deeds get rewards from Allah the Almighty and for KUPU SB to become a blessed institution,” the monarch said.

His Majesty later conferred 251 students with Master’s Degree, Postgraduate diplomas, Bachelor’s Degree and Higher Diploma in various courses.

These include Master of Religious Teaching (Aqidah), Master of Religious Teaching (Fiqh), Master of Religious (curriculum), Master of Religious Teaching (management and administration), Master of Religious (supervision), Postgraduate Diploma of Religious Teaching, Postgraduate Diploma of Religious Teaching (teaching Arabic to non-Arabic speaker), Bachelor of Religious Teaching (usuluddin), Bachelor of Religious Teaching (shariah), Higher Diploma of Religious Teaching (usuluddin) and Higher Diploma of Religious Teaching (shariah).

G530 Racing Team ‘A’ beat a strong field of cycling teams in the local circuit with a time of 7:59:35.183 to win the overall title in the 6th Lof Cycling Challenge 2016 which ended along the vicinity of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium yesterday.

Team Giant Miri finished first runners-up after clocking a time of 7:59:49.512 while Belait Cycling Club ‘A’ settled for third place with a time of 8:00:44.603.

The rider team manager Fahmi Ibrahim heaped praise to the trio of Azmi bin Abd Hadzid, Shannon bin Basman and Yudi Rachmad Mursidi adding that the cyclists had delivered according to plan.

“We are very happy with the win because we have prepared this so well for the past 3 to 6 months. Even since last year we have prepared well so basically we target for the team prize and go for the individual events,” said Fahmi in an interview with the Bulletin after the prize presentation ceremony which was held at the VIP parking lot of the Indoor Stadium.

“We prepare and make selection from the best riders to ride for the team and we met everything we prepared in the plan. Basically the riders delivered well today,” he further added.

The team manager said they memorised the route to ensure that the riders familiarise the circuit and collected key points on the race requirements.

“We know the route inside out because we have played on the road for the past five to six weeks. We know all the key sections, the climb and even we looked at into the weather forecast whether it will play a major effect today.

“Depending on the strategy of the team, we have to see from the team list we participated today. Today there are 33 teams and there are a lot of strong teams but we are prepared.

“We have good riders and we believe we can deliver and as you can see from the race that in the last 10km it is kind of a decisive moment where all the strong riders that we want to win make a move.

“We are happy that we have prepared well according to plan,” the team manager continued.

Fahmi expressed his happiness of his team erasing last year’s disappointment of missing out on a podium finish after clinching the title.

“Words can’t describe because we didn’t perform well last year and we delivered this year,” said Fahmi.

Asked if they are preparing for future tournaments, Fahmi is looking forward to the race in Kota Kinabalu in two weeks’ time and has made the initially-planned Brunei Classics early next year to be the main target for the team.

The individual winners included Azmi in the national race category, Chen Chiung Fa of Modesto Cycling Team ‘B’ in the master category and Maximillian Feng HungChiat of Team Giant Miri in the elite category.

Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation (BDCF) in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and sponsored by Lof Bakery Sdn Bhd, a total of 192 riders were registered for the race including 17 female riders and 33 teams.

“We first met each other through training when we were still working,” added Haji Ariffin who said he used to work in the Royal Brunei Armed Forces while his wife is a retired Royal Brunei Police Force personnel.

Husna said that even after retiring, the couple maintained an active lifestyle and have joined many running events. Furthermore, they informed that they will be joining a marathon in Kuala Lumpur in November.

She also said that the charity run was one of the most enjoyable events she has attended.

“Everything felt well-organised and it was easy for us to manoeuvre our way through the route without any difficulties because of the adequate number of road signs,” added Husna. She said the route felt safe enough for the

couple to bring along children during the event.

“We had fun at the warm-up session too,” she chimed while mentioning that the organisers did a great job.

VFA slip to defeat to MB Perak

VETERAN Football Association (VFA) Brunei slipped to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of MB Perak team in a football friendly at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last night.

The VFA team, which were made up mostly of former national players who featured in the Malaysia Cup in the 1990s, kept the ball for long spells and demonstrated patience waiting to pounce for an opportunity and did exactly that as their two goals came from their exciting winger.

MB Perak manager Azhar Ahmad revealed that the two goals they conceded in the second half came from sloppy mistakes but regardless they have met their objective of fostering closer ties through football among the veteran football fraternity.

MB Perak had taken a two-goal lead through a brace from former Malaysia international K Nanthakumar in the first half.

However, the hosts hit back after the influential winger and another team-mate demonstrated patience taking a few touches between them and not pulling the trigger before setting up Radiman Haji Abdul Rahman who rifled a powerful low shot into the bottom corner.

The winger chose not to shoot early after taking the ball away from the defender before teeing up Ismail Haji Tengah to fire home the equaliser much to the frenzied scenes.

VFA Brunei were controversially denied a penalty after their winger, who were responsible for their two goals, were allegedly clipped by a MB Perak defender but the linesman waved play on much to the fury of the home crowd.

The visitors squandered a glorious opportunity deep into the second half after their number 17 skied an effort wide after being clean through having skipped a few markers with a pure exhibition of close control.

But, MB Perak scored early after the restart before adding another goal to wrap up the win.

VFA Secretary General Jabar Ithnin told the media that the football friendly became a possibility after receiving contact on bringing the Malaysia Cup legends to play in Brunei and the perfect challengers were the Veteran Football Association as hosts.

He continued that there are no problems for the veterans to compete at the international level if they made good preparations.

“We also have our own leagues (in the President and FA Cup) which help boost the fitness of players and increase understanding among the veteran players,” Jabar said in an interview.

Meanwhile, Azhar highlighted that both teams played well but his side rued their missed chances after letting VFA back into the game.

“Both teams played good but there were few mistakes. We should have delivered whereby when we had the chance and an open goal it certainly should have been converted three,” Azhar said.

Azhar indicated that it was inevitable in football that it will endanger the team if they could not take away their chances.

The team manager admitted the arrival of VFA’s right winger in the second half forced two or three uncharacteristic errors from his side which led to both goals for the home side.

The MB Perak team have played together for 8 years and have appeared in matches in the US as well as Singapore and Brunei for the first time.

The team manager expressed his gratitude to VFA for their kind and warm hospitality and in return proposed plans to invite them to a football friendly in Perak.

BRUNEI will be treating “each match like a final” when the AFC Solidarity Cup kicks off tomorrow in Kuching.

Head coach Kwon Oh Son said, “There are only three teams in our group. We need to win all the matches to qualify for the next round as the top team.”

The top two teams qualify for the knockout stage.

On preparations, Kwon said, “We are all set and ready to compete following our systematic preparation.

A SIGNIFICANT jump by Brunei in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2017 Report has increased the country’s visibility on the global investment radar as it intensifies efforts to diversify its economy away from oil and gas through attracting more foreign direct investment (FDI).

Brunei was named as the most improved economy in the world for the second year running in the prestigious report, with a 25-place surge to 72nd position out of 190 economies worldwide from 97th position last year, which is expected to catapult the Sultanate into the investment orbit of major international conglomerates.

Brunei Darussalam is proactively seeking FDI projects in five priority clusters which are the Halal industry, the technology and creativity sector, business services, tourism and downstream oil and gas, the Energy and Industry Department at the Prime Minister’s Office said recently.

The eight FDI companies that are already in operation are engaged in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, manufacturing, business and services and downstream oil and gas, with US$900 million worth of investment and boosting local employment by about 75 per cent.

Currently, nine other FDI projects are still in the implementation stage, with a total investment of over US$4.7 billion.

As part of strengthening its foreign direct investment base, Brunei has rolled out a red carpet for prospective investors, especially from China.

Brunei, welcomes more investment projects from China, the Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, said recently.

The minister, who is also a member of the FDI and downstream industry steering committee, said the Sultanate is pushing for economic diversification from oil and gas industry as envisioned by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

This year’s rankings saw Brunei maintain its 4th place among Asean member countries.

“In this process, Brunei welcomes FDI from China and other countries as it is helpful to the country’s economy, the minister said during a meeting with a preparatory team for the Brunei branch of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (BOCHK).

“We are trying to attract more tourists and industries to Brunei. We are happy to see BOCHK coming in when we want to work with China on many projects,” the minister added.

In World Bank’s previous report, the Sultanate’s original ranking was 84 which saw an improvement from 105 in 2014, however, the World Bank later introduced some changes to the methodology on some indicators such as on taxes, which has resulted in the readjustment of last year’s overall ranking for all economies, placing Brunei Darussalam significantly lower at 97th place instead of 84th in 2015.

This year’s rankings saw Brunei maintain its 4th place among Asean member countries, behind Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
